Milwaukee — MPC Endowment Ltd. has renamed its longstanding annual scholarship to journalism students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the late Whitney Gould.

Gould, who died in December at age 76, was a revered and influential journalist who grew up, studied and started her career in Madison before working at The Milwaukee Journal and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The MPC Endowment is the philanthropic arm of the Milwaukee Press Club. It began in 1973 with a mission of advancing excellence in journalism. The UW-Madison scholarship was one of MPC Endowment’s first initiatives and currently awards $1,500 to a student selected by Madison’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

While a student at Madison, Gould was a columnist for The Daily Cardinal, and although she didn’t formally study journalism, she later served on the journalism school’s board of visitors. Gould began her professional newspaper career in Madison as a reporter at The Capital Times, later becoming the paper’s first environmental reporter and eventually editorial page editor. Gould joined the editorial staff of The Milwaukee Journal in 1984 and retired from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in 2007 as urban landscape writer and architecture critic.

“Whitney cared deeply about the role that the media plays in keeping our democracy thriving,” said longtime friend and colleague Meg Kissinger. “So, it is most fitting that her name is now associated with fostering young talent to keep that precious mission alive.”
