Rep. Considine on Hemp Bill Passing the Assembly
This legislation updates state law regarding hemp, and creates more certainty for hemp producers, processors, and consumers in Wisconsin.
Madison – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly passed Senate Bill (SB) 188, otherwise known as the Growing Opportunities Act. This legislation updates state law regarding hemp, and creates more certainty for hemp producers, processors, and consumers in Wisconsin. Rep. Dave Considine (D-Baraboo) co-authored this bill with Representative Kurtz (R-Wonewoc), Senator Patrick Testin (R-Stevens Point), and Senator Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee). Rep. Considine released the following statement on the passage of SB 188:
“In the 2018 federal farm bill, changes were made to the laws surrounding hemp. The bill we passed today will align state law with those changes. I am excited to have worked with my colleagues on this issue so that our state can once again be a leader in producing and manufacturing hemp,” said Rep. Considine. “Wisconsin once thrived while producing this crop. I believe this legislation will ensure that the hemp industry is once again available and viable for Wisconsin’s farmers and agribusinesses.
“I have been an advocate for hemp since my first election and I am proud to be an advocate for these producers, consumers, and processors. Hemp can provide a new avenue for diversification during turbulent times on the farm like the ones we’re experiencing today. Thank you to my colleagues, the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection, and all of the stakeholders who were a part of making this bill a success.
