The Betty Brinn Children’s Museum announces events through December 2019

MILWAUKEE — T­­he following is the fall 2019 calendar of events at the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum.

Special Exhibits

Some Assembly Required

Oct. 19-Jan. 5

Betty Brinn Children’s Museum will debut its newest educational, traveling exhibit, Some Assembly Required, created in partnership with Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc., on Oct. 19. Some Assembly Required engages children in fun and challenging activities that help foster the development of key social-emotional skills and highlight Build-A-Bear Workshop’s Core Values: achieve, collaborate, celebrate, give, learn, and embrace. The exhibit is locally sponsored by PNC, and will be featured at the Museum through Jan. 5, 2020, before it travels to other family-friendly venues across the nation.

Neighborhood Night

Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19: 5-8 p.m.
Enjoy free admission from 5-8 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month, plus special workshops offered in the Museum’s Be A Maker space. Neighborhood Night is presented by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation with additional support provided by the Joy Global Foundation and US Bank, and media sponsor FOX6. Be A Maker programs during Neighborhood Night are sponsored in part by Nordstrom and the Stackner Family Foundation.

WaterStone Bank Day

Nov. 9: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

WaterStone Bank Day is a special day at the Museum highlighting financial literacy. Children can explore the Museum’s pretend WaterStone Bank exhibit and families will receive a take-home kit with pretend money and activities to do at the Museum and at home that promote good money management.

Sendik’s Day

Nov. 30: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Starting Nov. 9, shoppers can visit a Sendik’s Food Market and purchase select products, then show their receipt at the Museum on Nov. 30 to receive one FREE admission per product. On Sendik’s Day, visitors to the Museum can explore fun, hands-on exhibits like the pretend Sendik’s Food Market in Home Town, Pocket Park, Science CITY and Word Headquarters and participate in project-based learning activities in the Be A Maker space.

Special Exhibit Preview Event: Members-only

Oct. 18: 5-8 p.m.

Betty Brinn Children’s Museum members are invited for a night of open play in its new exhibit, Some Assembly Required, debuting to the public on Oct. 19. This event is free and exclusive to Museum members, registration details coming soon.

Weekly Programs

Birth through age 5 are critical years in a child’s development. In addition to special programs throughout the year, the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum’s weekly programs promote early learning while families have fun together. Space is limited. Visit bbcmkids.org for additional information.

Tot Time: Recommended for children ages 1-3

Every Thursday: 10:30-11 a.m.

Tot Time features songs, stories, games and other activities for the Museum’s youngest visitors.

Pint-Size Science: Recommended for children ages 2-5

Sept. 11 & 25, Oct. 9 & 23, Nov. 6 & 20, and Dec. 11 & 18: 10:30-11 a.m.

From the kitchen to the playground – and even in the car – science is everywhere. This facilitated program features hands-on science discoveries through stories, songs and experiments.

Environmental Explores: Recommended for children age 3 and older

Sept. 10 & 24, Oct. 8 & 22, Nov.12 & 19, and Dec. 3 & 17: 10:30-11 a.m.

Children participate in hands-on activities to explore nature and learn how to care for the Earth. This program is held in the Museum’s Be A Maker (BAM) space and in the BAM Urban Garden, weather-permitting.

Our Five Senses: Recommended for children age 3 and older

Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 15, and Dec. 20: 10:30-11 a.m.

Sensory skills are important for critical thinking and reasoning. Children can learn about how we communicate with the world around us and participate in educational activities exploring our five senses – sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing.

RIGAMAJIG^©: Recommended for children age 3 and older

Sept. 6, Oct. 4, Nov. 1, Dec. 6: 10-11 a.m.

RIGAMAJIG is a large-scale building kit that helps children develop their problem-solving skills, cognitive thinking and imagination through hands-on, open-ended play.

Stories and Songs with the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music: Recommended for children of all ages

Sept. 13, Oct. 11, Nov. 8, Dec. 13: 10:30-11:15 a.m.

Children’s imaginations will soar as they read and re-create storybook tales through drama, music and dance with the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

Insect Zoo with Presto-X: Recommended for children age 3 and older

Oct. 25: 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Visitors can learn about the fascinating world of insects with entomologists from Presto-X and meet some unusual insects for children to experience up close.

Maker Programs

The Museum’s Be A Maker (BAM) space is a communal workshop that invites families and groups to explore science, technology, engineering, arts/design and math by working on a broad range of do-it-yourself projects that help children build new skills, collaborate and share their accomplishments. Be A Maker: Open Making

Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-noon & 2-4 p.m., and Saturday 2-4 p.m.

The Museum’s Be A Maker space offers tools, equipment and materials that make it fun to tinker and create. Each month, BAM changes its focus to provide family-friendly projects and activities that promote learning by doing.

Be A Maker: Art Studio 

Sept. 21, Oct. 19, and Dec. 21: 2-4 p.m.

The Art Studio inspires young artists with opportunities to create unique projects with dry, wet and textured materials. Recommended for children ages 4 and older.

Sculpture Milwaukee Workshops

Every Friday, through Oct. 25: 2-4 p.m.

The Museum is pleased to partner with Sculpture Milwaukee for their 2019 Season. As part of their ongoing exploration of the installations on Wisconsin Avenue, the Be A Maker space will provide workshops inspired by the artwork.

Paint and Create Workshop

Oct. 26, Nov. 26, and Dec. 26: 11 a.m.-12 p.m.

Children can participate in a painting workshop facilitated by guest makers from Stickman Painting Studio. Museum admission is not included in workshop fee. Price: $5 per registrant.

Scout Programs

The Betty Brinn Children’s Museum offers guided programs that help Scouts meet STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art/design and math) badge requirements. Private troop workshops and events are also available for both Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups. Visit bbcmkids.org/girl-scouts/ for group reservation and workshop registration information.

Daisy Badge Workshop – What Robots Do, How Robots Move, and Design a Robot

Oct. 19 and Dec. 14: 12:30-2 p.m.

Daisy Scouts will earn all 3 of their Robotics badges by learning how we use technology and will have the opportunity to solve problems by building and designing their own robots. Participants will receive a Betty Brinn Children’s Museum patch and certificate. Museum admission is not included in workshop fee. Price: $15 per Scout

Brownie Badge Workshop – Home Scientist

Nov. 23: 12:30-2 p.m.

Brownie Scouts will learn that science is everywhere by participating in hands-on science experiments and demonstrations. Participants will receive a Betty Brinn Children’s Museum patch and certificate. Museum admission is not included in workshop fee. Price: $15 per Scout

Special Hours: The Museum will be closed Sept. 2-4, Nov. 16 & 28 and Dec. 24-25. The Museum will close at 3 p.m. on Nov. 15.

Admission: $9 per person; $8 for seniors (ages 55+); children age 1 and younger are free; out-of-state visitors are $1 more.
