Study to evaluate redevelopment on West Burleigh Street
Alderman Khalif J. Rainey said the study will focus on renovating existing properties, establishing new businesses and creating a more aesthetically pleasing environment.
Ascension Wisconsin has put forward $10,000 to support a new study examining strategies for redevelopment on W. Burleigh St. in the area from N. Sherman Blvd. to N. 59th St., which includes parts of the Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital – St. Joseph Campus.
Alderman Khalif J. Rainey said the study will focus on renovating existing properties, establishing new businesses and creating a more aesthetically pleasing environment. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Community Design Solutions design center will conduct a charrette and will work with neighborhood groups and property owners to effectively guide the study.
Alderman Rainey looks forward to seeing the insights and results the study will bring forward.
“Ascension Wisconsin is an integral part of the 7th District, and I’m pleased to see their commitment to redeveloping the area around the St. Joseph campus,” Alderman Rainey said. “I’m also confident that the UWM Community Design Solutions center will offer positive solutions for change for our neighborhood’s community members and property owners.”
Alderman Michael J. Murphy, whose 10th Aldermanic District includes a portion of the study area, said he also looks forward to the study and what positive suggestions it might offer.
“This vital stretch of Burleigh Street has an important history for the West Side and I am confident it can continue to play an important economic, cultural and neighborhood role going forward,” he said.
