Milwaukee, WI, September, 2013 – the Milwaukee-based volunteer environmental group Kompost Kids has been selected as the only finalist from Wisconsin in the fifth annual Tom’s of Maine “50 States for Good” community giving program. They have the chance to win $10,000 to fund their efforts to divert more than 75% of restaurant food waste from landfills and make soil for community gardens.

Now through October 15, supporters can help bring the funding to Milwaukee with the simple click of a mouse at 50StatesforGood.com. The “50 States for Good” program seeks to uncover local nonprofit groups that address community needs and engage volunteers to get the work done.

Melissa Tashjian, Kompost Kids Volunteer Director says, “We envision a world in which every person disposes of food residuals and compostable materials in an environmentally sustainable way, and the landfill is never an option. So-called “waste” can be regenerated into living soil, healing the Earth and nourishing our gardens, bodies, and souls. We envision a world in which government, businesses, families, and individuals unite so we can change the way we view our “waste” stream. Milwaukee have no municipal food waste composting program. Our landfills are nearing capacity and organic material should be diverted to compost operations.”

Funds will be used for a large-scale restaurant food waste composting pilot to mobilize and educate restaurants on how to divert 75% of their waste away from landfills. Kompost Kids will help Milwaukee meet their waste reduction goals and this pilot program will be able to divert more from the landfill and donate more quality compost back to community agriculture programs.

Non-profit finalists from each state were selected from a pool of nearly 1,000 nominations by an independent panel of judges. Susan Dewhirst, goodness programs manager at Tom’s of Maine said “50 States for Good makes it easy for anyone to have an impact and directly help organizations that are bringing goodness to communities in a variety of creative and inspiring ways.”
