Award-Winning Documentary About 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Nadia Murad, Screening at New Jan Serr Studio

The Women’s Center Sponsors MKE Film Festival Movie, “On Her Shoulders,” during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Milwaukee, Wis. – The film “On Her Shoulders” tells the story of Nadia Murad, 2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner, human rights activist, and Yazidi survivor of genocide and human trafficking. The Women’s Center is proud to sponsor this documentary at this year’s Milwaukee Film Festival. IndieWire calls this award-winning film “an essential portrait of the strength required to speak up.”

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and The Women’s Center staff will be on hand at Friday’s screening. Other showings of the film take place at the Avalon Atmospheric Theater on Tuesday, October 23 at 7:00pm and Friday, October 26 at 3:00pm. Friday’s 3:30 screening takes place at the newly opened Jan Serr Studio Cinema, the first pop-up theater of The Milwaukee Film Festival.

The Women’s Center’s mission is to provide safety, shelter, and support to empower all impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and trafficking. It is the only agency of its kind in Waukesha County, and for over 40 years has served the community through programs like emergency shelter, a 24-Hour Hotline, transitional living, counseling and support groups, legal advocacy, community education and violence prevention, and employment and life skills training. They provide translation and interpretation in any language, and child care while utilizing their services is offered to clients free of charge, along with all the programs listed above.
