Governor Walker Proposes Highest State Funding Level Ever for County Roads
The increase would bring state support to the highest level ever since county GTAs were created in 1994
LA CROSSE – Wisconsin’s counties would see a significant boost in funding for road projects in the next state budget under a plan announced by Governor Scott Walker today at the Wisconsin Counties Association 80th Annual Conference in La Crosse. The Governor’s proposal would increase calendar year General Transportation Aids (GTAs) to counties to 30 percent, which would be the largest single increase in funding and the highest funding level ever provided to counties through the program.
“Our plan would provide the most state funding for county roads since county general transportation aids were created in 1994,” Governor Walker said. “Maintaining a safe and reliable transportation system is a top priority, and this additional funding will help maintain our 19,000 miles of county highways.”
Since the creation of county GTAs in 1994, the highest percentage of costs covered by GTAs was 28.2% in 1998, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The proposed 30 percent funding level builds on the $24 billion invested into transportation during Governor Walker’s time in office.
