MILWAUKEE… The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) and its galleries—the Frederick Layton Gallery and Brooks Stevens Gallery—invite professional artists, designers and curators nationwide to submit proposals for exhibitions. Submissions are accepted on an ongoing basis, however, proposals for consideration for the 2018-19 season are due January 31, 2018. Exhibition proposals may be submitted at miad.edu/galleryrfp.

The mission of MIAD’s galleries is to support learning, cultivate conversation with the community and
demonstrate the cultural value of art and design. MIAD supports and welcomes emerging and established artists, designers and curators at all stages of their career working in all types of media. Specifically, MIAD is seeking exhibitions that:

  • Emphasize diversity and engage the college and community in issues of cultural construction and
    meaning.
  • Support learning and pedagogy through programming reflecting contemporary and historical trends in fine art and design.
  • Foster connections with creative professionals and institutions in the region for mutual support of programming and audience cultivation.
  • Expand the college’s curriculum and teaching by supporting new work and the curation of subjects and creative endeavors less commonly found in the college or larger community.

The Frederick Layton Gallery and Brooks Stevens Gallery feature six exhibitions during the year, including the MIAD Senior Exhibition every April. Proposals are reviewed twice per year.

Current exhibitions in MIAD’s galleries include:

  • “Chair5: Five Perspectives on Form, Function and Innovation” – a highly interactive and experimental furniture exhibition co-produced by the Chipstone Foundation and MIAD, on view through March 3, 2018.
  • “FANTASTIC: Four Contemporary Illustration Artists” – an exhibition on view through December 2, 2017, featuring renowned illustration artists Henrik Drescher, Frances Jetter, Katherine Streeter and Carl Dunn, and curated by Madison-area art director Patrick JB Flynn.

MIAD’s galleries are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

At the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, students driven to become creative professionals have the freedom to develop their talents beyond traditional boundaries while immersed in a transformative studio, academic and career-driven curriculum. On graduation, they join thousands of successful MIAD alumni whose talents are continuously in demand, and whose lifework is driven by the passion to inspire, problem solve, and innovate for our economy and society.
