Hundreds Turn Out to Oppose Anti-Immigrant Bill
"Since last year’s election, anti-immigrant rhetoric has reached shameful new levels, and this bill is a shining example of that."
Madison – State Representative JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement on the public hearing for SB 275, an anti-immigrant bill that limits local control.
“Today, hundreds of Wisconsinites came to the Capitol to make their voices heard. They attended the public hearing on the latest anti-immigrant, anti-Latino effort by Wisconsin Republicans, SB 275.
“Since last year’s election, anti-immigrant rhetoric has reached shameful new levels, and this bill is a shining example of that. This bill is bad public policy that will harm the relationship between law enforcement and the community they protect. Victims of crimes will be afraid to reach out to the police, which will leave victims vulnerable and help criminals avoid the consequences of their crime. This bill will make many feel unsafe and targeted. This poorly thought-out legislation is a political talking point at the expense of safe communities.
“The onslaught of people who came to testify today shows how important this issue is for so many of us. Wisconsinites drove from all over the state to share their stories and stand up for justice and equality. Thank you to everyone who took the time out of their day to put a face on the true impact of this legislation.”
