Rep. Mark Spreitzer statement on Article V convention
"An Article V convention is an untested, uncontrollable, and undemocratic risk that would open Pandora’s Box to rewrite our U.S. Constitution."
MADISON- Today, the State Assembly will vote on a resolution calling for an Article V convention for the purpose of proposing amendments to the U.S. Constitution. In response, Rep. Mark Spreitzer (D-Beloit) issued the following statement:
“An Article V convention is an untested, uncontrollable, and undemocratic risk that would open Pandora’s Box to rewrite our U.S. Constitution. We have never had an Article V convention before and have no way of stopping it from rewriting the U.S. Constitution once it begins. There is no requirement that our state’s voters would have any say over who represents Wisconsin at a convention.
“Clearly, an Article V convention is not how we should approach changing the bedrock document that forms our country and guarantees our rights. I strongly oppose an Article V convention.”
