Milwaukee County Accountability Program Promises Better Results for Youth
Supervisors Romo West and Mayo Announce Success in Juvenile Detention Program
Milwaukee – Milwaukee County Supervisor Peggy Romo West, District 12, Chair of the Health and Human Needs Committee of the Milwaukee County Board, and Supervisor Michael Mayo, Sr., District 7, Interim Vice Chair of the Health and Human Needs Committee, are pleased to announce that the Milwaukee County Accountability Program is now full to capacity and on-track to save $180,000 in juvenile detention costs in 2013.
The Milwaukee County Accountability Program uses the juvenile detention facility as a short-term, dispositional placement as allowed by state statute.
“In 2010, the Milwaukee County Board began to create this important opportunity for Milwaukee County’s youth,” said Supervisor Romo West. “In October, we launched this comprehensive program, which provides continuity for our juveniles by keeping them in touch with the resources they are familiar with after their stay is over.”
Supervisors Romo West and Mayo thanked the state for granting Milwaukee County the authority to keep juvenile offenders at its own, local facility for a longer period of time than previously permitted.
“The program allows Milwaukee County to detain a maximum of 12 juveniles for up to 180 days, saving Milwaukee County money and keeping our juveniles closer to their families and community,” said Supervisor Mayo. “This is a win-win for the youth and taxpayers of Milwaukee County.”
A complete report on the program will be presented at the Health and Human Needs Committee of the Milwaukee County Board at its meeting on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 9 a.m.
