Rep. Zamarripa to Rep. Sanfelippo, “Say it ain’t so, Joe.”

"I am so very disappointed that Joe chose to play politics..."

Today, Rep. JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee) responded to Rep. Joe Sanfelippo’s (R-Milwaukee) accusations that the truth doesn’t matter to her.

“I have done nothing but fight for truth, justice, and the American way since being sent to the Capitol by the people of the 8th Assembly District to represent their best interests.

Rep. Joe Sanfelippo and I have enjoyed a positive rapport in the past. We differed greatly on the anti-immigrant, anti-local government SB 533, but we still dialogued about it one-on-one, as well as in the public hearing.

It pains me to know that Joe would tell the public I am being untruthful as he knows full well that his bill, SB 533, essentially stopped the collaborative efforts by Milwaukee County and the City of Milwaukee to offer local identification cards to some of our most vulnerable constituency groups.

Joe knows that under Gov. Scott Walker and a Republican majority, local governments across this great state have seen their shared revenue decreased. This includes Milwaukee, which is why the County and the City pooled their resources to be able to provide local ID cards. Joe’s bill, SB 533, will prohibit this collaborative effort, which is why I continue to let people know that SB 533 is an anti-local government bill, in addition to being an anti-immigrant effort.

It’s also hypocritical of Rep. Sanfelippo to accuse me of putting out misleading statements, when he himself, during the public hearing on SB 533, in the Assembly committee on State Affairs and Government Operations, continued to harp about how Milwaukee leaders were encouraging people to vote illegally, knowing full well that we had received assurances from both the Milwaukee County Executive’s office, as well as the City of Milwaukee that there would, in fact, be verbiage on the local ID card that would indicate that the card is not valid for voting purposes.

I am so very disappointed that Joe chose to play politics, but I believe he may be having buyer’s remorse for having put his good name on a bill that sets our immigrant constituents back and takes away local control.”
