Natural Forms: The Art of Roy Staab

Roy Staab, International award winning artist,  will have a solo exhibit of photographic prints of his organic installations at The Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts, beginning Saturday December 6th -January 3rd.

Staab, Milwaukee’s Wisconsin’s most renowned artist, is known worldwide for his innovative, site specific, simple yet intricate sculptural installations that eventually will self-destruct. He uses organic matter to create thought-provoking large scale linear formations made indoor and outdoor spaces.

In 2012 Staab was awarded Artist of the Year by the Milwaukee Arts Board. In 2010, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Museum of  Wisconsin Art in West Bend. In 2009, he had a 30 year Retrospective Exhibit at INOVA in Milwaukee. In 2006, he received the Critics Award from Geumgang Nature Art Biennale in South Korea, to name only a few of his recent awards.

Staab is a native Milwaukeean who began his art career at Layton School of Art, then earned his Bachelors of Fine Arts from UW-Milwaukee in 1969.  He lived and did artwork in Europe, primarily Paris, during the 1970’s. then moved back to the US to live in New York in 1980.

It was after his return that Staab began creating installations in his Brooklyn neighborhood from materials he found in local dumpsters and from discards from Soho sweatshops.  He continued to broaden his creative installations by using organic materials in water at the end of Brooklyn’s Flatbush Avenue and in the Hamptons on Long Island.

Staab’s artworks have been installed in Central Park, Manhattan and on the Hudson River, North Carolina, Japan, Finland, Italy, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, France, Korea, Taiwan and throughout the United States.
