Milwaukee Arts Board 2014 grant distribution totals $217,000
At its May 13 meeting, the Milwaukee Arts Board approved the recommendation of its citizen review panel to award $217,000 in grants ranging from $3,500 to $7,000.
An exhibit of garments fabricated in Milwaukee from sketches made by a woman who perished in the Holocaust; a theatrical collaboration with the VA to raise public awareness and honor the service of Milwaukee’s female veterans; and a series of outdoor artist-in-residencies engaging with youth are among 33 projects awarded funding recently by the Milwaukee Arts Board.
At its May 13 meeting, the Milwaukee Arts Board approved the recommendation of its citizen review panel to award $217,000 in grants ranging from $3,500 to $7,000. MAB grants require a dollar-for-dollar cash match from other sources, and the combined budgets of the 33 selected projects is more than $3.2 million.
“Milwaukee’s arts and cultural institutions are not only important to our local economy, they breathe life into our city,” said Milwaukee Common Council President Michael Murphy, chair of the Arts Board. “The arts inspire us, entertain us, challenge us, educate us and bring members of our diverse community together across barriers.”
Mayor Tom Barrett added, “We know the arts are essential to a vibrant, healthy community. Arts Board funds support projects that might not otherwise be possible.”
The next Milwaukee Arts Board meeting is Tuesday, June 10, at 4 p.m. at the Tenth Street Theatre, 628 N. Tenth Street. A reception will follow the board meeting, with the awards presentation beginning at approximately 5 p.m.
At the reception the MAB will also honor the five recipients of the third annual Friends of the Arts Award given to individuals who, often behind the scenes, have distinguished themselves through exceptional service to Milwaukee’s arts community. Konrad Kuchenbach and John Holland have for decades served as volunteers, board members, major donors and historians for many music and theater companies in Milwaukee. The late Dorothy Nelle Sanders, Lucinda Gordon and Gloria Wright co-founded the African American Art Alliance at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
The Milwaukee Arts Board grant program is funded by the City of Milwaukee with additional support from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin.
