Wisconsin is among a coalition of 25 states, cities and counties suing the Trump administration for rolling back rules that limit heat-trapping greenhouse gas emissions from coal and gas-fired power plants.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice joined the coalition after the Environmental Protection Agency repealed the Biden-era regulation earlier this month. The power sector is the second-largest source of the nation’s planet-warming pollution.
The coalition filed a petition for review of the EPA’s decision in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
“The Trump administration has chosen more wildfire smoke, more extreme weather, more harms to people’s health — and, of course, more in profits for the fossil fuel industry,” said Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul in a statement. “The EPA should be protecting us from pollution, not clearing the way for it.”
The EPA said the repeal of the Biden administration’s rule would save the industry more than $300 billion when it announced the move. An EPA spokesperson said it doesn’t comment on pending litigation.
