Back to Craft: The Art of Labor by Hand
SHOREWOOD, WI – On Monday, October 12 at 6:00pm, local tile historian Ben Tyjeski will present, “Back to Craft: The Art of Labor by Hand,” at the Shorewood Village Center, speaking on the purpose of handicrafts and the struggle of artists and makers in the 21st century.
Through the lens of beautifully handmade tiles and terra cotta, Tyjeski will unveil how the Arts & Crafts was never a style, but a set of fundamentals.
He will speak on the movement as a quality of life and work, a way of thinking, a pursuit of joy, and a right to self-governance.
From the practice of nature’s harmony as a muse, the intricacies of form and function, and the synthesis of beauty and utility, these ideals inspired artists and designers for centuries, but Tyjeski asks, “what about the current one?”
The artist and writer will address why shaping the future is in our own hands.
The event is sponsored by the Shorewood Public Library and the Shorewood Historical Society. Tyjeski is a local author, ceramics artist, M.P.S. Art teacher, and writer for Urban Milwaukee’s Tile Town.
