Golden Eagles Open BIG EAST Play With 1-1 Draw at Butler

Christianson's go-ahead goal spoiled by Butler's dramatic late equalizer

INDIANAPOLIS — The Marquette University women’s soccer team (4-1-5, 0-0-1 BIG EAST) played to a 1-1 draw against Butler (5-2-2, 0-0-1 BIG EAST) on Saturday night at Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl, as the Golden Eagles opened conference play on the road.

Neither side found the net in a tightly contested first half, with Marquette holding a 7-4 edge in shots.

The deadlock broke in the 75th minute. Haley Christianson buried a header set up by Kaylie Sheehan and Lilly Coats, scoring her team-leading fourth goal of the season and giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Butler answered in the game’s final minute, as they converted a diving header with nine seconds remaining in the match to level the score at 1-1 and secure the point for the Bulldogs.

  • For the second consecutive season, Marquette and Butler draw in the BIG EAST opener
  • Christianson’s go-ahead goal was her fourth of the season, leading the Golden Eagles.
