25 Years on the River: Milwaukee River Challenge Returns October 3, 2026

(MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, September 16, 2026) – The Milwaukee River Challenge returns Saturday, October 3, celebrating 25 years of competitive rowing on Milwaukee’s rivers. Racing begins at 9 a.m. and concludes by 2 p.m., bringing high school, collegiate and club crews from throughout the Midwest to Milwaukee for one of the region’s most challenging regattas.

The race features men’s and women’s fours and eights competing on a demanding three-mile course that begins at 25th and Canal Streets on the Menomonee River. Crews head east before making a sharp turn north onto the Milwaukee River, navigating narrow passageways beneath 18 bridges as they race through downtown Milwaukee. The course follows the Milwaukee Riverwalk before finishing just south of Pleasant Street adjacent to Schlitz Park.

The Milwaukee River Challenge attracts crews from across the Midwest, including high school, collegiate, and club teams. Milwaukee’s own rowing community will be represented by the Milwaukee Rowing Club, while collegiate competitors include teams from Milwaukee School of Engineering, Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin, and other regional programs.

The 25th anniversary race will offer plenty of opportunities for spectators to experience the action. Popular viewing locations include:

• Harley-Davidson Museum grounds
• The dramatic 90-degree turn at Water Street in the Historic Third Ward
• Pere Marquette Park
• The Riverwalk at Schlitz Park

Restaurants and bars along the Riverwalk also provide opportunities to enjoy brunch, lunch or a beverage while watching the crews race through downtown.

At Schlitz Park, spectators can hear running commentary throughout the day from seasoned race veterans while enjoying food and beverages and mingling with visiting race teams. With crews racing just feet away along the Riverwalk, the finish provides an exciting final vantage point as teams make their push to the line.

The Milwaukee River Challenge was first conceived in 2001 by the Milwaukee Riverwalk District to celebrate the completion of major components of the Riverwalk. Twenty-five years later, the race has become a favorite regatta for rowers from throughout the Midwest and a unique annual event for Milwaukee spectators.

The regatta is presented by Schlitz Park and sponsored by the Milwaukee Riverwalk District in conjunction with The Milwaukee Rowing Club. Other 2026 partners include:

WHAT: 25th Annual Milwaukee River Challenge Crew Race for high school, collegiate and club crews of 4s and 8s

WHEN: Saturday, October 3, 2026 beginning at 9 am and running up to 2 pm.

WHERE: The race begins on the Menomonee River at 25th and Canal Streets and heads east to the confluence of the Milwaukee River where the course makes a sharp left turn through downtown with the finish line just south of Pleasant Street adjacent to Schlitz Park. Schlitz Park serves as race central for all competing teams.
