Tom Tiffany Announces Taxpayer Accountability Plan in Altoona

ALTOONA, WI – Today, Tom Tiffany unveiled his Taxpayer Accountability Plan in Eau Claire County, outlining a series of reforms to audit state government, identify waste and duplication, increase transparency, and give Wisconsin taxpayers a clearer picture of where their money is going.

“Wisconsin taxpayers work hard for every dollar they earn. Government should work just as hard to earn their trust,” said Tiffany. “State government needs to prove it is using the money it already has responsibly. As governor, we are going to bring more transparency, better results, and less waste to state government.”

Tiffany’s Taxpayer Accountability Plan will:

  • Audit state government to identify waste, fraud, and duplication. Tiffany also committed to adding more auditors after Governor Evers vetoed the creation of four new state auditor positions this past budget cycle.
  • Modernize OpenBook Wisconsin to make it easier for taxpayers to search and understand state spending.
  • Create public agency dashboards showing taxpayers where their money is going, what services agencies are providing, and the results taxpayers are receiving.

“We’re going to find the waste. We’re going to eliminate duplication. And we’re going to demand results for every dollar taxpayers send to Madison,” Tiffany said. “Government should be accountable for every dollar it takes from taxpayers.”

Tiffany cited Newcap in Green Bay and cases of Medicaid and SNAP fraud in Milwaukee as examples of why Wisconsin needs stronger oversight of taxpayer dollars.

Tiffany also reiterated his commitment to return Wisconsin’s $3 billion budget surplus to taxpayers and pursue long-term tax relief.
