There’s been endless debate as to whether it’s technically a viaduct, overpass, etc. I’ll leave this to Civil Engineers to sort out.

The uniquely Milwaukeean moniker “High Rise Bridge” always reminded me of the Beverly Hillbillies referring to their swimming pool as the “cement pond”.

Great article, John. As for “devoid of any decorative …lighting schemes,” there were actually 6 upward facing LED lights installed on three of the tallest concrete piers (one on each side) just north of St. Paul Avenue following either the major interchange rebuild in 2008 or the deck rehabs. in 2013 or 2018. I recall they changed colors for holidays or other events (Go Brewers yellow & blue!). It was minimal but sent the message that someone cared about whimsy in this concrete jungle. I’m guessing the LED infrastructure is still there, you can still see the LED fixtures. Maybe someone from the DOT just needs to change the bulbs. Any corrections of the details of my memory welcome!
