It is so easy to blame the residents for complexes that are allowed to deteriorate. It’s not the residents; it is the lack of proper management and management that prioritizes profits over people. If the Woodlands Condominiums were turned into a co-op, the complex could be rescued. Here is the thing, the more people feel a sense of home–a voice in the care of their home–they push out those who would commit criminal behavior. People want to live in safe communities–communities in which they feel a sense of belonging. The problem is when they have no say in care and maintenance, community building, as well as the services which made their units feel home-like, people don’t feel respected and thus feel no obligation to care. Apathy breeds quickly in such situations resulting in criminal behavior escalating.
The language we use when discussing these essential developments is disrespectful to those who need affordable housing. Respect and community do more to prevent crime than gates, fear, NIMBY, and over policing. There is the meme, “Nothing about us without us” applies to building safe affordable housing. It also would not hurt if NIMBY neighbors applied the Christian principle of “welcoming strangers.”
NIMBYs are just ridiculous. Would be surprised if the project happens at all at this point.
