Why is freeway clearance under these bridges a County Parks’ concern? That’s a problem for the state DOT.
These bridges predate the freeway, so adjustments to clearance should fall to the state DOT. not Milwaukee County Parks.
Yes…. Why is the county paying for the bill for this? Sounds like a state problem.
What aspects of the bridges’ condition or clearances
would prevent the following?
Jack the bridges up and place riser blocks on top of the
piers/abutments. If the weight of the former track’s ballast
layer is too much, why not remove it and replace it with a shallower (and removable) deck? This could make future inspections and maintenance of the steelwork easier.
If the bridge is never going to bear heavy loads again, it may be feasible to
torch-cut a percentage of the structural members out.
Try to leverage what you’ve got.
