SUMMARY:The Flight Portfolio with Best-Selling Author Julie Orringer
DESCRIPTION:Best-selling author of The Invisible Bridge\, Julie Orringer\, is coming to Milwaukee to expound on her newly published historical novel\, The Flight Portfolio. \nThe Flight Portfolio is based on the true story of Varian Fry’s extraordinary attempt to save the work and the lives of artists\, including some Jewish artists fleeing the Holocaust such as Marc Chagall\, Marcel Duchamp\, Max Ernst\, Hannah Arendt\, Franz Werfel and André Breton. Join Orringer for an in-depth look at the research that was undertaken to discover the narratives of those Fry saved\, the labor he accepted to ensure their safety\, as well as his complex relationships with them. \nIn 1940\, Varian Fry–a Harvard educated American journalist–traveled to Marseille carrying three thousand dollars and a list of imperiled artists and writers he hoped to rescue within a few weeks. Instead\, he ended up staying in France for thirteen months\, working under the veil of a legitimate relief organization to procure false documents\, amass emergency funds\, and set up an underground railroad that led over the Pyrenees\, into Spain\, and finally to Lisbon\, where the refugees embarked for safer ports. \nThe Flight Portfolio opens at the Chagalls’ ancient stone house in Gordes\, France\, as the novel’s hero desperately tries to persuade them of the barbarism and tragedy descending on Europe. Masterfully crafted\, exquisitely written\, impossible to put down\, this is historical fiction of the very first order\, and resounding confirmation of Orringer’s gifts as a novelist. \nThis lecture will be immediately followed by a book sale and signing. Pre-order The Flight Portfolio and/or The Invisible Bridge at the link below to get your copy now! Books can be shipped (at the cost of the purchaser or picked up at Jewish Museum Milwaukee). \nMuseum Members $3 | Nonmembers $5

SUMMARY:Gallery Night with Chagall’s Le Cirque
DESCRIPTION:Be part of a rare opportunity to experience Marc Chagall’s legendary Le Cirque portfolio for FREE on Gallery Night! Iconic attributes of Chagall’s creations – his quintessential use of vivid color\, dreamlike composition and fanciful characters – befittingly capture his lure to the circus and its emblematic encapsulation of the human condition. \n‘For me\, a circus is a magic show that appears and disappears like a world. These clowns\, bareback riders and acrobats have made themselves at home in my visions. Why? Why am I so touched by their make-up and their grimaces? With them I can move towards new horizons.’ –Marc Chagall \nLe Cirque summons the spectacle of the circus experience in all its colorful variety — clowns\, acrobats and women riding bareback\, stands brimming with onlookers – and consists of 23 color and 15 black-and-white lithographs published in 1967 by Tériade Éditions. The whimsical prints will be accompanied by a display that explores Wisconsin’s grand circus history\, and celebrates the tradition of Milwaukee’s Great Circus Parade. \nMarc Chagall’s Le Cirque series is on loan from the permanent collection of the Manitowoc-based Rahr-West Art Museum.

SUMMARY:Gallery Night and Day at the Grohmann Museum
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy free admission during Milwaukee’s Gallery Night and Day event\, featuring Roll Up Your Sleeves: Photographs by Jim Brozek \nMilwaukee photographer Jim Brozek has spent his career documenting workers plying their trades. Like many great industrial photographers and cultural ethnographers\, he also worked alongside these individuals—developing his own brand of participant observation. To truly understand his subjects and capture their essence\, he first seeks to understand their working life and motivations. In the process\, he discovers much more about them than merely what they do for a living.

SUMMARY:Gallery Day with Chagall’s Le Cirque
DESCRIPTION:Be part of a rare opportunity to experience Marc Chagall’s legendary Le Cirque portfolio on Gallery Day! \nADMISSION Adults – $7.00 Seniors (60+) – $6.00 Students (with ID) – $4.00 Disabled Visitors (with ID*) – $4.00 Museum Members – FREE Children (6 and under) – FREE Active Duty Military – FREE
