SUMMARY:Sculpted Realities: Adolph Rosenblatt in Perspective
DESCRIPTION:“Perspective” carries both figural and literal meaning\, as is extraordinarily clear when looking at the sculpture of Adolph Rosenblatt. From the perspective of art history\, Rosenblatt’s work follows in the legacy of artists like Pieter Bruegel\, Honoré Daumier\, Alberto Giacometti\, and Duane Hanson\, who strove to represent the everyday in honest (and often unflattering) ways. \nMore deeply\, however\, perspective plays a complex role in Rosenblatt’s sculpture\, a medium which\, due to its three-dimensionality\, can offer quite different experiences depending on the viewer’s physical relationship to the object. \nRosenblatt’s work\, as this lecture explores\, creates a dynamic relationship with the viewer that speaks to a long history of representing ordinary life\, and which proves both challenging and highly rewarding for the thoughtful observer. \nSarah C. Schaefer is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. Her work examines modern religious visual culture and she is currently at work on a book that examines the biblical imagery of nineteenth-century French artist Gustave Doré. An exhibition she is curating for the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University\, “The World Turned Upside Down: Apocalyptic Imagery in England 1750-1850\,” will open in October 2017. Her writings have appeared in Material Religion\, 19th-Century Art Worldwide\, and Art in Print\, and she has lectured at major institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Musée d’Orsay. \nOffered in connection with Moments & Markers: An Adolph Rosenblatt Retrospective\, an exhibit on display at the Jewish Museum Milwaukee\, June 16 – August 27\, 2017.

DESCRIPTION:Composed of guitarist Meng Su and Yameng Wang\, the Beijing Guitar Duo’s performances and recordings have impressed the public with “an ability and artistry that exceeds their years.” This past season took them to countries such as Germany\, Russia\, Spain\, Portugal\, Denmark\, Poland\, China\, Panama\, and the United States. Their debut CD Maracaípe\, received a Latin Grammy nomination for the titled piece\, which was dedicated to them by renowned guitarist/composer Sergio Assad. Their second CD\, Bach to Tan Dun\, has been widely noted for the world-premiere recording of Tan Dun’s “Eight Memories in Watercolor\,” specially arranged for the duo by Manuel Barrueco. A recording in trio\, China West\, with Maestro Barrueco was released in May 2014. \nThe Beijing Guitar Duo performs as part of the Wilson Center’s 5th annual Guitar Festival\, which runs August 17-19\, 2017. The Guitar Festival is an eclectic celebration of the world’s leading classical\, fingerstyle\, jazz\, and rock & blues guitarists.

DESCRIPTION:For nearly two decades\, the world at large knew precisely where to find multi-faceted guitar hero Kevin Eubanks. For five nights a week\, Eubanks was cranking up the band and issuing steamy solos as music director on NBC’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno\, where he played with seemingly every meaningful musician across genres. In spring of 2010\, after 18 years on the job\, the Philadelphia native opened a new chapter as a recording and touring artist with the release of his first album for the Mack Avenue label\, Zen Food\, followed by the 2013 release of his second album\, The Messenger. In 2015\, he teamed up with fellow modern-day jazz prophet Stanley Jordan to record an album of originals and originally drawn covers\, the “wholly fanciful\, meditative” Duets. \nKevin Eubanks performs as part of the Wilson Center’s 5th annual Guitar Festival\, which runs August 17-19\, 2017. The Guitar Festival is an eclectic celebration of the world’s leading classical\, fingerstyle\, jazz\, and rock & blues guitarists.

DESCRIPTION:McDonald’s “Praise for Peace” will bring a free night of inspiration and joyful song to Uihlein Hall on Saturday\, August 26. Presented by the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts\, the event is general admission seating with doors opening at 5 p.m. and the musical celebration starting at 6 p.m. \nHeadlining the concert will be Bishop William Murphy\, an Atlanta-based performer whose fourth album\, “God Chaser” reached the Gospel Albums chart\, as well as the Billboard 200. The event will also feature the talents of the Ugandan Kids Choir\, which will be touring the US in August. The choir is made up of 10 sponsored children who come from the poorest parts of Uganda. The children are chosen for their enthusiasm\, ability\, and dedication—all of which make them potential leaders when they return to their communities. \nLocal talent will also be featured throughout the evening with performances by Milwaukee’s own Bishop Darrell Hines and a 150-voice choir of local singers of all ages. \nThe event is co-hosted by Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee\, which will be spotlighted throughout the evening for its efforts to make a difference in the City of Milwaukee. Many Boys & Girls Clubs members will practice all summer long to prepare for the concert.
