SUMMARY:Julian Assange: Can Exposure Bring Justice?
DESCRIPTION:Fidel Narvaez\, former Consul at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London and John Kiriakou\, U.S. torture program whistleblower and former CIA chief of counter-terrorism in Pakistan will discuss this case by Zoom. \nNarvaez and Kiriakou will use their intimate knowledge of Assange and the Espionage Court to discuss how media blackouts and misinformation have affected the public’s perception of Julian Assange and his trial. Unbeknownst to most Americans\, the US case imploded when convicted pedophile\, Siggi Thordarson\, recanted testimony elicited by the FBI with the promise of immunity. Despite Amnesty International’s and 23 other civil liberties groups’ united call for his release\, Assange remains in prison as the U.S. appeals. According to Assange’s fiancé\, “the process” has become the punishment. Assange published evidence of U.S. and allies’ war crimes. The news blackouts suggest that exposure of the truth might return this publisher to his family and rescue press freedom. Host: Ann Batiza.

SUMMARY:Gallery Night & Day MKE at MIAD
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Gallery Night & Day MKE at MIAD on Friday\, Jan. 21\, 5 – 9 p.m. and Saturday\, Jan. 22\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. View two new exhibitions in MIAD’s galleries. Free admission. \nPRESENCE & PERSISTENCE: VISIONS OF AMERICAN BLACKNESS\nFrederick Layton Gallery\nThe work of Sandra Bridges\, David Anderson\, Chrystal Denise Gillon ‘98 and Jerry Jordan all depict Black lives in America from their own perspectives\, ranging from black-and-white renderings to paintings and collage work. The essential humanity and spirit embodied in these artworks speaks out in opposition to the continued marginalization and racism that continues to plague our country in the 21st century. \nGREAT IDEAS OF HUMANITY: POSTERS FOR THOUGHT\nBrooks Stevens Gallery\nFrom 1950-1975\, Chicago-based Container Corporation of America ran a campaign heralded as one of the best in advertising history\, Great Ideas of Western Man. The world has changed since 1975\, but great ideas are timeless. The Design Museum of Chicago has brought the series into the 21st century and commissioned contemporary artists and designers to create visual responses to Great Ideas of Humanity. Like the original series\, the contemporary work does not advertise a product\, but an ethos to make the world a better place via thoughtful design. This exhibition features posters and art objects by 60+ artists and designers\, alongside reproductions of the original advertising campaign. \nMore information on these exhibitions and future events: miad.edu/galleries
