SUMMARY:Julian Assange: Can Exposure Bring Justice?
DESCRIPTION:Fidel Narvaez\, former Consul at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London and John Kiriakou\, U.S. torture program whistleblower and former CIA chief of counter-terrorism in Pakistan will discuss this case by Zoom. \nNarvaez and Kiriakou will use their intimate knowledge of Assange and the Espionage Court to discuss how media blackouts and misinformation have affected the public’s perception of Julian Assange and his trial. Unbeknownst to most Americans\, the US case imploded when convicted pedophile\, Siggi Thordarson\, recanted testimony elicited by the FBI with the promise of immunity. Despite Amnesty International’s and 23 other civil liberties groups’ united call for his release\, Assange remains in prison as the U.S. appeals. According to Assange’s fiancé\, “the process” has become the punishment. Assange published evidence of U.S. and allies’ war crimes. The news blackouts suggest that exposure of the truth might return this publisher to his family and rescue press freedom. Host: Ann Batiza.

SUMMARY:Gallery Night & Day MKE at MIAD
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Gallery Night & Day MKE at MIAD on Friday\, Jan. 21\, 5 – 9 p.m. and Saturday\, Jan. 22\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. View two new exhibitions in MIAD’s galleries. Free admission. \nPRESENCE & PERSISTENCE: VISIONS OF AMERICAN BLACKNESS\nFrederick Layton Gallery\nThe work of Sandra Bridges\, David Anderson\, Chrystal Denise Gillon ‘98 and Jerry Jordan all depict Black lives in America from their own perspectives\, ranging from black-and-white renderings to paintings and collage work. The essential humanity and spirit embodied in these artworks speaks out in opposition to the continued marginalization and racism that continues to plague our country in the 21st century. \nGREAT IDEAS OF HUMANITY: POSTERS FOR THOUGHT\nBrooks Stevens Gallery\nFrom 1950-1975\, Chicago-based Container Corporation of America ran a campaign heralded as one of the best in advertising history\, Great Ideas of Western Man. The world has changed since 1975\, but great ideas are timeless. The Design Museum of Chicago has brought the series into the 21st century and commissioned contemporary artists and designers to create visual responses to Great Ideas of Humanity. Like the original series\, the contemporary work does not advertise a product\, but an ethos to make the world a better place via thoughtful design. This exhibition features posters and art objects by 60+ artists and designers\, alongside reproductions of the original advertising campaign. \nMore information on these exhibitions and future events: miad.edu/galleries

DESCRIPTION:Please join us in welcoming Professor Robert LaFleur\, Professor of History\, Anthropology\, and Chinese Literature at Beloit College\, who explores Confucius’ fascinating ideas about relationships – Individual\, Family\, Society\, and Government – which continue to offer us great benefit in our contemporary society.\nAbout Confucius:\nConfucius was a Chinese philosopher\, poet and politician of the Spring and Autumn period who was traditionally considered the paragon of Chinese sages. Having graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Carleton College\, Professor LaFleur received his doctorate from The University of Chicago’s John U. Nef Committee on Social Thought\, where he combined work in three distinct fields: anthropology\, history\, and Chinese literature.\nProfessor LaFleur’s current work combines historical research using Chinese\, Japanese\, and Korean sources with anthropological fieldwork on each of China’s five sacred mountains. He is also doing research for an intellectual biography of Marcel Granet\, a French scholar of China.\nProfessor LaFleur received the Charles S. Bassett Teaching Award from Colby College in 1998\, as well as the James R. Underkofler Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award from Beloit College in 2001 and 2011. He was also a finalist in 2010 for the Eugene Asher Distinguished Teaching Award from the American Historical Association. He is the recipient of a Millicent C. McIntosh Fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation and has been a frequent visiting scholar with the University of Wisconsin’s Institute for Research in the Humanities and the East-West Center in Honolulu. In 2013\, Professor LaFleur gave a month-long series of lectures and seminars at Beijing University. He spent 2014 on a research fellowship at the Internationales Kolleg für Geisteswissenschaftliche Forschung (International Consortium for Research in the Humanities) in Erlangen\, Germany.\nProfessor LaFleur is the lead author and editor of two textbooks: China: A Global Studies Handbook and a thoroughly revised and expanded version\, Asia in Focus: China. SUMMARY:Clem Snide
DESCRIPTION:$12 adv/ $15 at the door (advance sales until 3pm day of show\, then available at the door). Doors at 7pm\, showtime 8pm \nWe want to ensure we are doing everything we can to help keep our community safe\, so we are now requiring the following for entry to Live Shows: \nProof of Vaccination -OR- Proof of a Negative COVID 19 Test taken within 72 hours of the show. \nMasks are encouraged but not required. \n// \n“The last ten years have been a rollercoaster of deep despair and amazing opportunities that somehow present themselves at the last possible second\,” says Eef Barzelay. “During that time\, the band bottomed out\, I lost my house\, and I had to declare bankruptcy. The only way to survive was to try to transcend myself\, to find some kind of deeper\, spiritual relationship with life. Once I committed to that\, all these little miracles started happening.” \n‘Forever Just Beyond\,’ Barzelay’s stunning album under the Clem Snide moniker\, may just be the most miraculous of them all. Produced by Scott Avett\, the record is a work of exquisite beauty and profound questioning\, a reckoning with faith and reality that rushes headlong into the unknown and the unknowable. The songs here grapple with hope and depression\, identity and perception\, God and the afterlife\, humanizing thorny existential issues and delivering them with the intimate\, understated air of a late-night conversation between old friends. Avett’s production is similarly warm and inviting\, and the careful\, spacious arrangement of gentle guitars and spare percussion carves a wide path for Barzelay’s insightful lyrics and idiosyncratic delivery. \n“I look up to Eef with total respect and admiration\,” says Avett\, “and I hope to survive like he survives: with total love for the new and the unknown. Eef’s a crooner and an indie darling by sound and a mystic sage by depth. That’s not common\, but it’s beautiful.” \nNamed for a William S. Borroughs character\, Clem Snide first emerged from Boston as a three-piece in the early 1990’s\, and the group would go on to become a cult and critical favorite\, picking up high profile fans from Bon Iver to Ben Folds over the course of three decades and more than a dozen studio albums. NPR highlighted the Israeli-born Barzelay as “the most underrated songwriter in the business today\, with a sneakily firm grasp on poignancy and humor\,” while Rolling Stone hailed his songwriting as “soulful and incisive\,” and The New Yorker praised his music’s “soothing melodies and candid wit.” \nBarzelay currently resides in Nashville\, TN. \n$12 adv/ $15 at the door (advance sales until 3pm day of show\, then available at the door).
