SUMMARY:In a Place of Dreams - Closing Reception at Lily Pad Gallery West
DESCRIPTION:Lily Pad | West is pleased to present “In a Place of Dreams” a solo exhibition of Canadian artist France Jodoin. \n“Nothing I paint is real. I like to say the buildings\, places and people are like actors without the script. I leave the rest to the imagination of the viewer.”\n-France Jodoin \nFrance Jodoin’s fantastical landscapes blur the lines between air\, land and sea. Shrouded in mist and muted color\, suggestions of people\, ships and buildings create frameworks for imaginations to run wild. Composed of fragments from the artist’s memory\, both real and imagined\, the worlds created by France Jodoin spark a suggestion of a simpler time with a slower pace. \nJodoin’s work is held in both private and public collections\, including the Sherbrooke Museum of Fine Arts and Cirque du Soleil. Jodoin lives and works in a small town nestled in the forests of southern Quebec. \nWe invite you to join us for an opening reception in March\, followed by Gallery Night MKE in April. France Jodoin will be visiting the gallery over April Gallery Night MKE. \nWork on Display February 28 – April 30

SUMMARY:Big Dopes with The Nile Club and Maybe Hazel @ Anodyne
DESCRIPTION:Join Anodyne for an evening of live music featuring Big Dopes (on tour from Colorado)\, The Nile Club and Maybe Hazel! \nBig Dopes recalls the loose\, lighthearted feel of 90s alternative and indie pop\, with influences somewhere between Paul Simon\, Jonathan Richman\, and Pavement. Lead songwriter Eddie Schmid uses a playful\, conversational baritone to sing through neuroses and inner dialogues\, touching on long-distance relationships\, being a houseguest\, and gratitude for friends named Tom. \nThe Nile Club is a band who writes and self records music for all. Named after an abandoned pyramid-shaped nightclub in Wisconsin\, they deliver a noisy and chaotic take on indie music. “Wake Up With a Sense of Pride” coming 2023. \nMaybe Hazel is an alternative band by day/trivia group by night from Milwaukee\, WI whose members met on Craigslist. With an ear for current DIY trailblazers and a fondness for the indie-pop of the early 2010s\, the group boasts a unique blend of genres in their debut release “Direct to Home Video.” The EP is a hooky magnum opus featuring lead single “Fist Fight\,” which Ben Slowey of Breaking and Entering deemed a “total pop banger for the beach.” The band has been on record to have accepted the compliment. \nTickets to the show are $10 in advance or $15 the day of the show. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.

SUMMARY:“Gather by the Waters ~ The life\, times and music of the people who came here”
DESCRIPTION:David HB Drake will present his Milwaukee history program “Gather by the Waters ~ The life\, times and music of the people who came here” for “Milwaukee Day” on Friday April 14\, 2023 at 7 p.m. at the Beulah Brinton House. A free will donation to benefit the Bay View Historical Society is requested at the door. \n“Gather by the Waters” presents the history of Lake Michigan in songs\, stories\, and over 150 PowerPoint images\, where the inland seas attracted people of many different heritages to make this place home. \nFrom the first Native Americans and French fur traders to the tall ships of the Yankee land speculators\, from Black folks traveling the underground railroad to the mass migrations of German\, Polish\, and Irish to these shores\, David tells the story of the many lives who have gathered by these waters. The program will be presented with guitar\, concertina and a variety of handmade instruments including banjo\, Native American flute\, and dulcimer\, plus acapella songs of sailing men. PowerPoint slides illustrate the songs and sing-along slides encourage folks to join the choruses in seven languages. \nThe common theme of the waters that carried us here will flow in a program that reminds us we are all “in the same boat.”

SUMMARY:Bottoms Up with DevOps
DESCRIPTION:DevOps is a set of practices that combines software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops). It aims to shorten the systems development life cycle and provide continuous delivery with high-quality software. DevOps is complementary to Agile software development; several DevOps aspects came from the Agile approach of breaking down components and batch sizes. \nMany fundamental DevOps practices are inspired by other well-known practices as well\, such as Lean and Deming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle and The Toyota Way. DevOps is a “bottom-up\,” flexible practice\, created by software engineers to meet software engineers’ needs. \nJoin New Resources Consulting as we\, and a panel of experts\, discuss the “bottom-up” approach and flexible practices that support software development and help you obtain company objectives. The event is free to attend; all are welcome to join us for an evening of networking and connecting around this shared topic. \nFeatured Speakers: \n\nDavid Manske | Sr Dir IT Digital Strategy & Technology @ Generac\nPatrick Gaynor | IT Delivery Manager @ RW Baird\nMike Krenzke | VP of R&D @ ConsortiEX\n\nModerator: Dale Mittelstaedt | VP Platform & Process Integration @ HSA Bank

SUMMARY:Family Hop Week
DESCRIPTION:The Hop\, presented by Potawatomi Hotel & Casino\, is looking ahead to spring break and the long-awaited return of our Family Hop program\, slated for March 27 through April 8\, 2023. \nBack for the first time since 2019\, Family Hop is a fun and free way for families to explore Milwaukee via the streetcar. And thanks to the support of our partners at Children’s Wisconsin\, Rooted MKE and Classy Girl Cupcakes\, we’ve got some wonderful activities planned. \nSTORIES ON THE HOP\nThe signature event of this year’s Family Hop will be “Stories on The Hop\,” a children’s storytime right on board the streetcar. The Hop has partnered with Rooted MKE\, Milwaukee’s only BIPOC children’s bookstore\, makerspace and academic support center\, to host children on a stationary streetcar outside of The Hop’s maintenance facility. The kids will hear a reading of “Last Stop on Market Street” by Matt de la Peña\, participate in a discussion about the book’s themes\, and engage in streetcar-themed craft projects before heading home with their very own copy of the book\, thanks to the support of Children’s Wisconsin. This unique event will take place from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday\, April 1\, and while it’s free to attend\, advance registration is required. To register\, visit https://rootedmke.as.me/storiesonthehop. \nHOP BINGO\nAlso as part of this year’s Family Hop\, the streetcar is bringing back Hop Bingo as an on-board game to play with children. The Milwaukee-themed Bingo card will contain common sights to spot along the streetcar route and a designated area for a special sticker that the rider can receive from their streetcar operator. Once a child spots enough sights for bingo and receives their sticker\, they can bring their completed card to Classy Girl Cupcakes on N. Jefferson St. near the Cathedral Square streetcar platform to receive a free cupcake (valid Monday through Saturday during Classy Girl’s normal business hours for children ages 12 and under). Bingo cards can be downloaded from www.thehopmke.com/family-hop or picked up at select locations throughout the city including all Milwaukee Public Library branches. \nHOPPING WITH THE FAMILY\nAdditionally\, The Hop has produced some helpful tips for hopping with the kids to make a streetcar adventure with the little ones fun and easy for the whole family. Visit www.thehopmke.com/family-hop for helpful tips and other family-friendly destinations along the route.
