SUMMARY:Social Impact: Entrepreneur Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Rachel Sumekh\, Founder & CEO of Swipe Out Hunger. \nSocial entrepreneurship is defined as\, “an approach by companies and entrepreneurs\, in which they develop\, fund and implement solutions to social\, cultural\, or environmental issues.” \nToday\, over 90% of young professionals want to use their talents in a way that will affect positive change. While money is always a determining factor when seeking a new role\, young entrepreneurs and job seekers are increasingly putting passion over profit. \nCome check out the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center at Concordia University Wisconsin and hear stories from Rachel Sumekh of Swipe Out Hunger and other young people who have decided to become social entrepreneurs. \nKeynote: \n• Rachel Sumekh\, Founder & CEO of Swipe Out Hunger \nThe organization is the leading nonprofit in addressing hunger amongst college students. Her work has been recognized by The Obama White House\, The New York Times and landed her on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list. Swipe Out Hunger began in 2010 with a few friends as a college project at UCLA. Since\, it has grown onto over 80 universities\, serving 1.7 million nourishing meals. Their innovative approach allows university students to donate the unused funds from their meal plans to food insecure peers. Earlier this year the organization was called upon to author a piece of legislation to address college student hunger. The state of California adopted the legislation and put $20+ million behind it. Before launching Swipe Out Hunger full time\, Rachel followed her millennial urge to change the world and served those facing poverty as a case manager in Chicago. Rachel serves on the board of her spiritual community\, IKAR\, and is a proud graduate of UCLA. She credits her upbringing as the child of Iranian Jewish immigrants for her intersectional perspective. \nAdditional Speakers: \n• Kurt Owens\, Concordia University Wisconsin alumni and Founder of Bridge Builders \n• Anghelo Gangano (Introduction)\, Concordia University Wisconsin Student Working on Aquaponics \n+++ \nThis event is part of YPWeek Milwaukee presented by Concordia University Wisconsin. \nYPWeek is a week long platform for discovery\, adventure and meaningful conversations about the issues that matter among young professionals. SUMMARY:Beyond the Stereotypes: A Conversation with Gen X\, Y\, & Z
DESCRIPTION:We all have stereotypes about the generations\, and these play into how we view and market our cities: Gen X’ers favor the suburbs to the city and hold more conservative views. Gen Y’ers (aka millennials) embrace city living\, postpone marriage and can’t save enough money to afford a home. Gen Z’ers seek instagrammable moments and\, as tech natives\, live online. \nThe stereotypes would have us believe that each generation is seeking something drastically different from the place they live. But\, are these generational stereotypes really true? When it comes to our cities\, might people be searching for similar things? \nJoin us for a panel discussion hosted by Visit Milwaukee with representation from Gen X\, Y and Z. Our guests will share their perspectives on Milwaukee and Wisconsin as a place to live\, and how their thoughts have shifted in the different stages of their lives. \nLight lunch will be available while it lasts. More featured speakers coming soon! \nThank you to our sponsors for this event: Concordia University Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation. \nFeatured Speakers: \n• Dr. Steve Gerner\, Concordia University Wisconsin Dean of Students and Director of Center for Urban Education Ministries \n• Jilly Gokalgandhi\, Inclusive Excellence Advisor at American Family Insurance \n+++ \nThis event is part of YPWeek Milwaukee presented by Concordia University Wisconsin. \nYPWeek is a week long platform for discovery\, adventure and meaningful conversations about the issues that matter among young professionals. SUMMARY:Candide
DESCRIPTION:Leonard Bernstein’s operetta is a masterpiece for the ages. Based on Voltaire’s satire of innocence\, optimism and life’s unexpected lessons\, Candide tells the story of two young people\, their round-the-world romp and series of absurdly unfortunate events. Bridging the gap between musicals and opera\, Candide holds a special place in Skylight history\, produced twice at Skylight’s old space on Jefferson Street. This is its first time on the Cabot stage.
