SUMMARY:Attentive or Absentminded: Habits of Mind in the Age of AI with Meghan O’Gieblyn
DESCRIPTION:Join the Center for 21st Century Studies and the AI and the Humanities Collaboratory for lecture by Meghan O’Gieblyn\, author of God Human Animal Machine and the essay collection Interior States\, which won the 2018 Believer Book Award. \nAt a moment when we are outsourcing many intellectual and creative tasks to machines\, it’s worth thinking about the point of thinking itself. Is it a means to an end\, or an end in itself? Are humans just “stochastic parrots\,” mindlessly producing language in a way that is not so different from AI\, as some tech luminaries contend\, or is there something more going on in our minds? \nWhile these questions may seem new\, they harken back to older debates about the relationship between thought and language\, freedom and necessity\, and the fine line that exists between attention and automaticity. Long before the advent of digital technologies\, two twentieth century philosophers\, Hannah Arendt and Simone Weil\, wrote about some of these questions through the lens of the technologies of their times. Their writing anticipates many of the challenges of the age of AI and calls attention to the more ordinary and insidious ways that consciousness becomes ossified by social convention\, as well as the moral and political risks that arise when we fail to “think what we are doing.” \nFree street parking available in neighborhoods near venue. Paid parking available at the Union Garage (Lot #22). \nRefreshments will be served at 3:30 p.m. Lecture begins at 4 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. \nPrior registration is requested for the purposes of estimating attendance. Please complete the form at https://uwm.edu/c21/event/meghan-ogieblyn/. No personal information will be collected.

SUMMARY:The Beauty Queen of Leenane

Packed with biting humor and searing tension\, this McDonagh masterpiece won the 1998 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play—and trust us\, it’s earned every bit of that honor. \nCONTENT WARNING: This production contains adult subject matter. SUMMARY:Going to Work for the Community: A Visual History of the Beckum-Stapleton Little League
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Night Opening—April 11\, 5-9 p.m.\, featuring a Gallery Talk with the Curators at 6 p.m. \nSince former Negro League baseball player James W. Beckum founded the Beckum-Stapleton Little League (BSLL) in 1964\, over 25\,000 Milwaukee youth have participated in the League’s organized baseball and softball programs. Operating as the oldest Black-led Little League outside the South\, the BSLL’s dedicated and diverse community of volunteers\, supporters\, and players have worked to maintain the League as a vital Milwaukee institution for over half a century. With the recent passing of founder James Beckum on November 11\, 2024\, and the League currently commemorating its 60th anniversary\, celebrating and sharing the history of the BSLL is more important than ever to ensure that this essential part of Milwaukee’s Bronzeville neighborhood continues to fill the City of Milwaukee with pride\, joy\, and a love of baseball for decades to come. \nThis exhibition will feature photographs and ephemera from BSLL history and is curated by Dr. Michael Carriere\, MSOE HSC Professor\, along with Kenneth Jon-Edward Bartelt and Rodney Bourrage\, Sr. of the Team Beckum Public History Project.
