SUMMARY:Dino! An Evening with Dean Martin
DESCRIPTION:Effortlessly charming and charismatic\, Dean Martin rose from humble immigrant roots to embody the definition of cool as a Rat Pack heartthrob and one of America’s most adored entertainers. “Dino!” transports us to a hip 1970s club where – accompanied by his signature drink in hand – the “King of Cool” entertains all by weaving personal stories with a smorgasbord of classic hits including “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head\,” “Everybody Loves Somebody\,” “That’s Amore” and more. Warm and endearing\, “Dino!” suavely shines the spotlight once again on this legendary star and the glory days of the nightclub crooner. \nBy Armen Pandola

SUMMARY:Promoting Womens' Art in the WPA with Kay Wells
DESCRIPTION:Women played crucial roles in the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration as artists\, researchers\, and administrators. This lecture focuses on the women who worked for the Index of American Design\, a WPA project that celebrated early American handicrafts. Women artists developed innovative techniques for documenting those handicrafts\, researched their historical significance\, and organized popular exhibitions to showcase them to the public. They promoted early American textiles in particular as women’s art\, and in the process they transformed public perception of the history of American art and women’s work. \nAbout the Exhibition:WAM’s exhibition is the first comprehensive retrospective of her work. It begins with black-and-white images made for the 1929 Riverside High School yearbook. The exhibition includes early social realism for the Work Progress Administration (WPA)\, textile designs\, and numerous still lifes. Most of the exhibition features Grotenrath’s invention of a unique\, personal art\, for which she is known and remembered. \nOpen Now – March 31\, 2023 \nAbout WAM: The Warehouse Art Museum (WAM) is located at 1635 W. St. Paul Ave\, Milwaukee. Exhibitions\, performances\, and lectures are based on The Warehouse Art Museum’s permanent collection of over 7\,300 modern and contemporary works on paper\, paintings\, photography and sculpture. The collection is available for scholars\, students and art enthusiasts\, and works are available for institutional loans. For more information\, please visit wammke.org or call 414-252-0677. \nAdmission to WAM is always free. Masks are required.

SUMMARY:Panalure Album Release with special guest Liv Sings
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the release of Panalure’s new album with an evening of live music at Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co.! \nPanalure \nBob Schneider (drums) and Bob Jennings (keys and sax) are veteran Milwaukee musicians who also play with Semi Twang and Paul Cebar’s Tomorrow Sound. Fiddler Susan Nicholson of Frogwater is the newest member of the band and appears on Panalure’s latest recording. Slide guitarist Michael DeBoer has been a staple of the Milwaukee music scene for years. Bassist Ken Hanson is a founder of Panalure and also plays with Milwaukee favorites Killer Joe and Longacre. The band is fronted by singer-songwriter Fred Ziegler and Kari Hoff on vocal harmonies. \nLiv Sings \n…..Singing/writing years ago in a Rockabilly band called “The Screaming Lillies” & barely 19\, Liv packed up and re-located herself to Nashville from the Midwest\, where she performed at places like ‘Tootsies’ and ‘The Rose Room’ while supplementing her income occasionally by playing for money on the streets with an open guitar case. \nNot long after Nashville\, Austin became her next home wherein she formed the first incarnation of ‘The Lovelies’…Re-forming the band after returning to the Midwest is where The Lovelies had the most success. After recording four records\, touring & charting nationally twice\, the band ended in 2004/05. \nTwo albums were released under her next endeavor\, ‘The Dark Horse Project’\, production team Marc Hutner & Grant Curry (Pleasure Club) helped her to refine a new sound she had envisioned…… capturing a beautiful \, haunted landscape of listening. Recording deep in the south of Louisiana proved to be just what she needed to unearth her next phase of writing\, and performing. \nIn the last several years however\, Liv prefers to play solo\, releasing now two records..The first solo release entitled ‘LIV SINGS’ Love Songs For The Forlorn And Misguided\, and the second 2017 release entitled ‘LIV SINGS Light Of The Valley Shadow Of The Mountain’ both of which she composed\, played\, recorded and mixed nearly the entire album alone in her home studio. Both albums are now available through cdbaby\, and itunes. \nTickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show will begin at 7 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:Ex Fabula StorySlams are live events where community members connect and share true\, personal stories related to the night’s theme\, told without props or notes. Come just to listen – or throw your name in the hat for a chance to share a true story related to the theme “Exes” — stories of friendships\, jobs and careers\, and relationships that came to an end for the better (or worse). At the end of the night\, the audience votes by secret ballot to crown an *Audience Favorite. \nThe audience can also be a part of the storytelling by submitting UltraShorts! These are “ultra-short” stories on the night’s theme that will be read onstage by the emcee. \n*Audience Favorite: the storyteller voted audience favorite will be invited to tell another story at ALL STARS for the chance to be crowned Season Favorite.

SUMMARY:WI Cuba Coalition Presents Film for Women’s History Month 'Maestra'
DESCRIPTION:The Wisconsin Cuba Coalition is celebrating Women’s History Month with a showing of “Maestra\,” a film that tells the story of how young women became empowered while helping illiteracy in Cuba. \nThe family friendly presentation will take place from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Mitchell Street Public Library\, 906 West Historic Mitchell Street in Milwaukee. A discussion will follow the 33-minute film. There will also be food. \nCuba launched its literacy campaign in 1961 seeking to achieve 100% literacy within a year. It sent 250\,000 volunteers\, mostly women\, to teach reading and writing throughout the island. About 100\,000 of the volunteers were under 18. \nMaestra’s director\, Catherine Murphy\, spent six years interviewing Cuban literacy teachers for the film. It is narrated in English by acclaimed writer and activist Alice Walker\, and includes subtitled interviews with nine women. These include Cuban feminist Norma Guillard and Cuban LGBT activist Diana Balboa\, who were both 15 at the time of the campaign. The film is distributed by the non-profit feminist media arts organization Women Make Movies. \nThe film is being presented in honor of Women’s History Month\, for which the National Women’s History Alliance has declared this year’s theme to be “women who tell their stories.”

SUMMARY:5PM to Nowhere\, The Keystones\, Yonder @ Anodyne
DESCRIPTION:Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. will host an evening of local music featuring 5PM To Nowhere\, Yonder and The Keystones! \n5PM To Nowhere: 5 PM to Nowhere is an alt-pop 4-piece band formed in 2020 by Milwaukee singer-songwriter Jacob Webb. Evoking the emotional balladry of Coldplay and the thematic songwriting of Sufjan Stevens\, he explores his own experiences and hopes in his music. 5 PM to Nowhere’s upcoming release\, Stoicism\, serves as a culmination of 15 years of musical and emotional exploration\, delving into Webb’s long and tumultuous journey of self-discovery. Stoicism drops on May 13. \nYonder: Founded in 2022 by Jon Blair\, Yonder is an Indie project that encapsulates different styles and approaches towards live shows\, as well as studio recordings. With influences from Alternative\, Reggae\, Americana\, and Jam music\, Yonder fuses genres together with an array of original songs\, as well as a variety of covers. After forming in September 2022\, Yonder has played a bunch of shows in Milwaukee; and have no plans of slowing down in 2023. \nThe Keystones: The Keystones are an alternative modern-rock band based in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. Born in Waukesha\, the very same place as the electric guitar\, the members of this unique\, out-of-the-box rock group hail from the golden era of grunge guitar\, one that’s full of heavy tones and hypnotizing garage beats that dance between Brit-indie-rock and new-age modern rock sounds. They’re a far cry from the glitzy\, indie pop groups that seem to fall out of the woodwork these days\, and they’re okay with that. Why? Because their goal isn’t to find the glossiest sound. In fact\, it’s much bigger than that: they want to make the town that created the guitar as we know it proud. \nTickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Advance tickets are available until 3 p.m. the day of the show. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m.

SUMMARY:Hard Times and Handicrafts with Jackie Schweitzer
DESCRIPTION:Join Warehouse Art Museum in welcoming Jackie Schweitzer for a talk about the Works Progress Administration and the Milwaukee Handcraft Project in the late 1930s. \nDuring the height of the Great Depression an innovative Works Progress Administration project in Milwaukee gained national attention for its original designs. Between 1935 and 1942 the Milwaukee Handicraft Project hired thousands of workers to produce textiles\, furniture\, toys and books. This lecture will feature period images of the workers and products from this project and provide context of WPA projects in Milwaukee at that time. \nWAM’s exhibition is the first comprehensive retrospective of Ruth Grotenrath’s work. \nThe exhibition is open until March 31. \nAdmission to WAM is always free. SUMMARY:BrainExpo 2023
DESCRIPTION:Scientific literacy is essential for successful decision-making in many aspects of life. However\, an alarmingly large number of Americans lacks even a basic understanding of the goals and methods of science. As a result\, the social relevance of scientific research had been under-appreciated — even distorted — among large sections of the population. Many Americans\, for example\, hold a dangerously cynical view of biomedical research\, with tragic consequences for public health. \nThe Medical College of Wisconsin’s BrainExpo is an effort to narrow the gap between the scientific community and the general public. BrainExpo 2023 will be a 2-day event (March 10 and 11)\, featuring 10 different exhibits hosted by over 50 volunteers\, and 3 lectures presented by MCW neuroscience faculty. Visitors will be able to see (and hold) real human and animal brains\, examine brain cells through microscopes\, experience visual\, auditory\, and tactile illusions that reveal the underlying structure of our perceptual experience\, and learn about the brain’s electrical activity\, brain imaging\, brain evolution\, and common neurological disorders. \nThe BrainExpo is unique in that it brings together researchers and community members in an environment that encourages free and prolonged exchanges. Visitors are free to wander around and explore the exhibits following their curiosity\, as in a science museum. Unlike a science museum\, however\, the exhibits are staffed by scientists who are actively participating in the generation of that knowledge\, thus providing a unique opportunity for visitors to experience science from a personal\, human perspective. For the researchers who volunteer\, the experience of translating technical knowledge into an account that resonates with individuals from various educational backgrounds encourages them to think of familiar scientific ideas from new perspectives\, potentially generating new questions for scientific exploration.

SUMMARY:The Cash Box Kings 'Oscar's Motel' Release Party
DESCRIPTION:Join the Cash Box Kings in celebrating the release of its new album “Oscar’s Motel.” \nThe Cash Box Kings are bona fide blues royalty. Co-led by real-deal Chicago blues vocalist and songwriter Oscar Wilson and songwriter\, harmonica giant and singer Joe Nosek\, the band plays masterfully raw and unvarnished houserocking blues. Wilson’s huge\, gritty vocals and Nosek’s powerhouse harmonica fuel their razor-sharp original songs. With their top shelf musicianship and trademark good humor\, The Cash Box Kings are a one-of-a-kind blues band. In the words of MOJO magazine\, the band is “flawless.” \nMixing tough Chicago and Delta blues\, jumping proto-rock ‘n’ roll\, and steamrolling “bluesabilly” (their original mix of Chicago blues and Memphis rockabilly)\, they attack every song they play with contemporary authority and old school authenticity. The musicians feed off of each other’s ideas and energy\, effortlessly moving from a lowdown purr to a full throttle roar. \nTheir albums have topped the Billboard Blues and Living Blues Radio Charts and earned them 15 Blues Music Award (BMA) nominations (including Album of the Year\, Best Traditional Album and Band of the Year). According to No Depression\, “The Cash Box Kings are a royal hive of raucous houserockers. Whether resurrecting the past or living in the moment\, they satisfy your craving for hardcore Chicago blues\, served up hot and tasty.” \nTickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Advance tickets are available until 3 p.m. the day of the show. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m.
