SUMMARY:Beyond the Stereotypes: A Conversation with Gen X\, Y\, & Z
DESCRIPTION:We all have stereotypes about the generations\, and these play into how we view and market our cities: Gen X’ers favor the suburbs to the city and hold more conservative views. Gen Y’ers (aka millennials) embrace city living\, postpone marriage and can’t save enough money to afford a home. Gen Z’ers seek instagrammable moments and\, as tech natives\, live online. \nThe stereotypes would have us believe that each generation is seeking something drastically different from the place they live. But\, are these generational stereotypes really true? When it comes to our cities\, might people be searching for similar things? \nJoin us for a panel discussion hosted by Visit Milwaukee with representation from Gen X\, Y and Z. Our guests will share their perspectives on Milwaukee and Wisconsin as a place to live\, and how their thoughts have shifted in the different stages of their lives. \nLight lunch will be available while it lasts. More featured speakers coming soon! \nThank you to our sponsors for this event: Concordia University Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation. \nFeatured Speakers: \n• Dr. Steve Gerner\, Concordia University Wisconsin Dean of Students and Director of Center for Urban Education Ministries \n• Jilly Gokalgandhi\, Inclusive Excellence Advisor at American Family Insurance \n+++ \nThis event is part of YPWeek Milwaukee presented by Concordia University Wisconsin. \nYPWeek is a week long platform for discovery\, adventure and meaningful conversations about the issues that matter among young professionals. SUMMARY:Candide
DESCRIPTION:Leonard Bernstein’s operetta is a masterpiece for the ages. Based on Voltaire’s satire of innocence\, optimism and life’s unexpected lessons\, Candide tells the story of two young people\, their round-the-world romp and series of absurdly unfortunate events. Bridging the gap between musicals and opera\, Candide holds a special place in Skylight history\, produced twice at Skylight’s old space on Jefferson Street. This is its first time on the Cabot stage.

SUMMARY:Shame Show & Tell: The Untold Stories of the Struggle for Success
DESCRIPTION:“Fail fast\, fail often.” It’s a much-loved (and perhaps\, over-used) phrase that captures the spirit of many successful entrepreneurs. There’s a joke in Silicon Valley that until you have a couple of failed companies under your belt\, people may not even take you seriously. \nSo then\, why is it so hard for us to talk about failure? Why do we only lift up stories of success\, and not the long\, hard journey it takes to get there? Whether in our workplaces or in our personal lives\, we all experience struggles – and we know that it’s from these experiences that we can grow and learn the most. \nJoin us as leaders from Gener8tor\, Meat on the Street\, MobCraft Beer\, OnMilwaukee and more share stories of their biggest struggles\, and how those struggles ultimately led to success. \nFeatured Speakers: \n• Adrienne Palm\, Director of gBETA Musictech & gBETA Northeast Wisconsin at gener8tor \n• Alexa Alfaro\, Co-Founder of Meat on the Street \n• Michael Cerda\, Founder of Cerda Design Co \n• Wes Tank\, Freelance Filmmaker\, Performer\, Artist \n• Henry Schwartz\, Founder of MobCraft Beer \n• Molly Snyder\, Senior Writer/Editorial Manager at OnMilwaukee \n• Kiran “Q the Sun” Vedula\, Creator/Curator/Educator \n+++ \nThis event is part of YPWeek Milwaukee presented by Concordia University Wisconsin. \nYPWeek is a week long platform for discovery\, adventure and meaningful conversations about the issues that matter among young professionals. SUMMARY:The Big Impact
DESCRIPTION:The Big Impact is a crowdfunded pitch event that changes the way people engage with philanthropy. \nHelp us support community\, place-based\, and entrepreneurial projects that shape our city. Pre-selected projects will be pitched by the Co:Lab cohorts\, interested in utilizing the funding to carry out their neighborhood projects. \nThe Co:Lab program is a deeply engaging and experiential opportunity for a select group of Milwaukeeans to apply their diverse skills\, build new connections into the city\, and work together to produce a high-impact solution for a real community issue. This year’s featured neighborhoods are Clarke Square\, Lindsay Heights and Riverworks. \nAttendees pay a fee of $25 to attend the event and vote for their favorite project. The winning pitch will go home with all of the money raised through ticket sales. A cash bar will be available. \n(Please note\, this event is non-refundable. If you purchased a ticket and can no longer attend\, your ticket fee will be applied to the winner’s fund.) \n+++ \nThe areas of opportunity that the Co:Lab teams are working on are as follows: \nClarke Square \nWith the highly robust real estate market in Walker’s Point approaching from the East and the appreciating residential real estate market from Silver City influencing it from the West\, Clarke Square is poised to benefit\, but also to wrestle with related challenges in the near future. How might the neighborhood establish a brand identity for the segment of the National Avenue corridor between Cesar Chavez Drive (historically S. 16th St.) and Layton Boulevard (historically S. 27th St.) in order to leverage its current and emerging assets for their highest and best community benefit? \nLindsay Heights \nThe connectivity of North Avenue and Fond du Lac Avenue provides an active thoroughfare for many residents and visitors to pass through the Lindsay Heights neighborhood. How might the neighborhood leverage the volume of passersby to creative intentional stickiness and a reason for folks to stay? \nRiverworks \nIn recent years\, the Harambee and Riverwest neighborhoods have re-positioned themselves as a district for creatives and makers\, including the investment in the new co-working space\, The VIBE. How can The VIBE start to break down the barriers for the Harambee and Riverwest neighborhoods and help connect the neighborhoods together\, creating a more accommodating space for events and entrepreneurs? \n+++ \nThis event is part of YPWeek Milwaukee presented by Concordia University Wisconsin. \nYPWeek is a week long platform for discovery\, adventure and meaningful conversations about the issues that matter among young professionals. This interactive conference brings together key leaders in the community\, at purposefully chosen locations that integrate the unique cultural assets with meaningful learning or social interaction.
