SUMMARY:International Jazz Day Event
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate International Jazz Day with us at our first annual event! \nJoin us at Saint Kate – The Arts Hotel for a free event featuring performances by MJI youth ensembles\, a presentation on the history of jazz in Milwaukee\, a display of iconic Milwaukee jazz photos\, and an MJI faculty performance. \nBut that’s not all! We’ll also be taking “A Great Day in MKE” photo\, as a nod to the famous “A Great Day in Harlem” photo by Art Kane for Esquire magazine in 1958. Musicians of all ages and levels are encouraged to meet in the River Center atrium to be a part of the photo. \nTo cap off the event there will be a community jam session open to musicians and listeners of all ages\, and the lighting of the Hoan Bridge with nine colors to replicate the International Jazz Day logo. \nAs a passionate advocate for jazz music and its ability to enrich and unify communities\, MJI is thrilled to bring together the Milwaukee community in celebration of International Jazz Day. \nDon’t miss out on this incredible event!

SUMMARY:2023 Spring Literary Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Milwaukee Public Library in partnership with the Boswell Book Company are pleased to present award-winning author\, Rebecca Makkai\, in conversation with Judge Derek Mosley. Ms. Makkai will be discussing her newly released novel\, I Have Some Questions for You. The proceeds of the event will be donated to the Milwaukee Public Library. \nThe 2023 Spring Literary Luncheon will take place on Thursday\, April 27\, at the Wisconsin Club in Milwaukee. SUMMARY:The Power of Stories in Advancing Reproductive Justice
DESCRIPTION:Join a collective of researchers and community organizers to discuss The Power of Stories in Advancing Reproductive Justice on April 24th at UWM’s Lubar Entrepreneurship Center. \nTwo goals are designed for this community networking event. (1) To offer examples of storytelling projects addressing various reproductive health topics and needs. (2) To create a space for Milwaukee-area researchers and community members to collectively share their own reproductive health and storytelling projects and facilitate opportunities for future collaborations and learning. \nExperience community-based reproductive justice storying projects ranging from infertility and pregnancy loss to Black infant mortality\, to stories written by Latinx health promoters\, a project on obstetric violence in the Caribbean and male experiences with infertility. A series of panelists will discuss how these topics — while varying in reach — use story as a central practice\, tool\, and resource to advance the aims of reproductive justice which is the “human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy\, have children\, not have children\, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities” (SisterSong). \nThe event is in-formal and will feature commentary from Heddy Keith of Center for Leadership of Afrikan Women’s Wellness (CLAWW)\, Assistant Professor Katinka Hooyer of MCW\, Maria Barker of PPWI\, and Anne Basting of UWM’s Center for 21st Studies. \nThe event is divided into three parts:\n5:00-5:40 p.m.: Pop-up Displays of Five Community-Based Reproductive Justice Projects\n5:45-6:15 p.m.: Panel Discussion featuring Heddy Keith\, Katinka Hooyer\, Maria Barker\, and Anne Basting\n6:15-7:00 p.m.: Community Networking & Informal Sharing of Other Reproductive Justice Projects \nThe event is free but we kindly ask you RSVP in advance here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-power-of-stories-in-advancing-reproductive-justice-tickets-597926934557
