SUMMARY:Frank Lloyd Wright’s Burnham Block historic site | Curator’s Virtual Tour
DESCRIPTION:Virtual visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s Burnham Block homes with Curator Mike Lilek. This virtual visit\, lecture\, and live Q&A will explore Wright’s earliest examples of affordable\, small scale dwellings. \n“You Can Own an American Home\,” promised a 1917 ad for Frank Lloyd Wright’s new American System-Built Houses. The lecture will explore Wright’s broad vision to shelter all Americans in a beautiful home of his design – with emphasis on the American System-Built Homes in Milwaukee. Wright would say\, “I believe this effort is the logical conclusion of my studies and my architectural practice…” \nThe home at 2714 W. Burnham St. is a Model B1 of the American System-Built homes. It has been meticulously restored to its 1916 appearance.  This tiny 805 square foot home brings together nearly all of Wright’s design principles from his earlier Prairie period. Nature is an extension of the interior spaces\, light fills the home\, privacy and serenity are primary.  The modest homes speak to our contemporary sensitivities of efficiency and economy. They challenge us to re-think how we build shelter and how we connect occupants to nature and the outdoors. Reflecting on the American System-Built Homes\, one scholar called them a “…life-enhancing work of art.” We couldn’t agree more! \nThis event will feature a virtual tour video and will end with a live Q&A. \nTickets are $10 and are available here. \nThis will be a virtual event hosted on the Zoom platform. \nYou will be sent the event URL by email after you purchase your ticket.

SUMMARY:How to use the Wisconsin Historic Homeowners' Tax Credit Program
DESCRIPTION:Please join Milwaukee Preservation Alliance for our online webinar to learn how you may be able to help pay for your historic home rehabilitation. \nDid you know that owners of historic residences in Wisconsin may be eligible for income tax credits that can help pay for their home’s rehabilitation? The Wisconsin Homeowners’ Tax Credit program returns 25 percent of approved qualifying rehabilitation expenses (of eligible historic homes) as a Wisconsin income tax credit. \nJen Davel will explain how the program works\, how to qualify\, and the five categories of work eligible for the tax credit. She will describe what makes a project and property eligible for the program and will guide us step-by-step through the online application process. \nJen was recently appointed Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer at the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS). WHS is the federally-designated State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) for the state of Wisconsin. The Preservation Office administers the Homeowners’ Tax Credit program. \nJen Davel holds a B.A. in Architecture from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Architecture with a certificate in Preservation Studies from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. After eleven years of work for architectural firms in Minnesota and Wisconsin\, she joined the State Historic Preservation Office as a preservation architect in 2010. In the last nine years\, she has been responsible for reviewing projects affecting historic buildings and structures in both the western half of the state and in the southern tier counties. \nWhy Should I Preserve My House \nHistoric Preservation is intrinsically important for its ability to enhance community pride and to create a sense of rootedness and belonging. Through a connection with history\, preservation can improve the quality of life and livability of communities. It also stimulates reinvestment and contributes to our economy\, creating jobs in construction\, architecture\, interior design\, engineering\, real estate\, accounting\, tourism and more.

SUMMARY:The Big Impact
DESCRIPTION:The Big Impact is a crowdfunded pitch event that changes the way people engage with philanthropy. \nHelp us support community\, place-based\, and entrepreneurial projects that shape our city. Pre-selected projects will be pitched by the Co:Lab cohorts\, interested in utilizing the funding to carry out their neighborhood projects. \nThe Co:Lab program is a deeply engaging and experiential opportunity for a select group of Milwaukeeans to apply their diverse skills\, build new connections into the city\, and work together to produce a high-impact solution for a real community issue. This year’s featured neighborhoods are Clarke Square\, Lindsay Heights and Riverworks. \nAttendees pay a fee of $25 to attend the event and vote for their favorite project. The winning pitch will go home with all of the money raised through ticket sales. A cash bar will be available. \n(Please note\, this event is non-refundable. If you purchased a ticket and can no longer attend\, your ticket fee will be applied to the winner’s fund.) \n+++ \nThe areas of opportunity that the Co:Lab teams are working on are as follows: \nClarke Square \nWith the highly robust real estate market in Walker’s Point approaching from the East and the appreciating residential real estate market from Silver City influencing it from the West\, Clarke Square is poised to benefit\, but also to wrestle with related challenges in the near future. How might the neighborhood establish a brand identity for the segment of the National Avenue corridor between Cesar Chavez Drive (historically S. 16th St.) and Layton Boulevard (historically S. 27th St.) in order to leverage its current and emerging assets for their highest and best community benefit? \nLindsay Heights \nThe connectivity of North Avenue and Fond du Lac Avenue provides an active thoroughfare for many residents and visitors to pass through the Lindsay Heights neighborhood. How might the neighborhood leverage the volume of passersby to creative intentional stickiness and a reason for folks to stay? \nRiverworks \nIn recent years\, the Harambee and Riverwest neighborhoods have re-positioned themselves as a district for creatives and makers\, including the investment in the new co-working space\, The VIBE. How can The VIBE start to break down the barriers for the Harambee and Riverwest neighborhoods and help connect the neighborhoods together\, creating a more accommodating space for events and entrepreneurs? \n+++ \nThis event is part of YPWeek Milwaukee presented by Concordia University Wisconsin. \nYPWeek is a week long platform for discovery\, adventure and meaningful conversations about the issues that matter among young professionals. This interactive conference brings together key leaders in the community\, at purposefully chosen locations that integrate the unique cultural assets with meaningful learning or social interaction. The activities engage the next generation in experiences that are important to you as a YP while educating your employers on the important role these functions play in retaining you as their workforce. \nConcordia University Wisconsin and its 9 educational centers are home to undergraduate and graduate\, traditional\, and non-traditional students from 46 states and 35 foreign countries. The University offers more than 80 programs in-person and online. Programs include not only Wisconsin’s largest MBA program\, but a variety of master’s degree programs and doctoral degrees in Education\, Physical Therapy\, Pharmacy\, and Nursing Practice. YPWeek participants can apply at no cost to CUW graduate programs using the waiver code “CUWYPAPP.”
