SUMMARY:Community Free Day for Choices of Consequence
DESCRIPTION:Jewish Museum Milwaukee is thrilled to host this community day for anyone living in Milwaukee County to visit Choices of Consequence: Denmark and the Holocaust for FREE! \nDuring WWII countries\, policies\, and populations across Europe were complicit in aiding the Nazis’ ‘Final Solution’ plan for ridding the continent of Jews. While the world was aware of the Jewish plight\, refusals to expand immigration quotas and antisemitism severely limited the options and odds of escape and survival. \nDenmark’s response served as an exception. The events and actions that saved roughly 95% of Danish Jewry will be brought to light through artifacts\, personal accounts\, and an anchoring photographic series\, Resistance and Rescue\, by Judy Glickman Lauder. \nDesigned to highlight the choices available to governments to be upstanders in the face of prejudice and discrimination\, this exhibit demonstrates the importance of governmental policy in the protection of its people. Additionally\, it spotlights a history of allyship and advocacy for the Jewish people by non-Jews\, and explore the power of photography to record and reveal historical truths. \n

SUMMARY:A Relaxed Occupation? Denmark During the Second World War
DESCRIPTION:The escape of the Danish Jews during the Holocaust was a remarkable achievement that still interests and inspires many people today. Join Professor Dean Krouk for an examination of some of the unique circumstances that characterized the Nazi occupation of Denmark\, which has been considered a more “relaxed” occupation relative to other Nazi-occupied countries. \nWhat made this occupation more “relaxed\,” and what did that mean in practice during the war years? When and why did the occupation intensify? How have later Scandinavian historians discussed and debated the occupation of Denmark? \nThis talk will provide an important context for the undeniable heroism of ordinary people in this famous instance of rescue/escape. \n

SUMMARY:intO tHe WiLd
DESCRIPTION:On March 26th & 27th\, Present Music will present two world premieres of original compositions. One of them will be Copper Canvas by GRAMMY®-nominated composer Andy Akiho\, which explores the number 29 from the Periodic Table of Elements. The other world premiere will be Turkish American composer Kamran Ince’s then\, nothing which asks big existential questions with colorful passion. \nIn addition to these world premieres\, crowd-pleaser and Pulitzer Prize-winner David Lang will present a droll\, counterintuitive arrangement of Steppenwolf’s iconic biker anthem Born to be Wild. The final piece of the evening\, 26 Little Deaths\, will honor illustrator Edward Gorey’s 100th birthday. Carla Kihlstedt’s work is based upon the late artist’s darkly humorous alphabet book The Gashlycrumb Tinies. Slides of the famous illustrations will accompany Kihlstedt’s vocals and violin. The performance will serve as an album-release party for the Kihlstedt-Present Music collaboration from Cantaloupe Music label. \n
