SUMMARY:Milwaukee Irish Arts: RAGING - Pint and a Play
DESCRIPTION:Staged reading of the one-act play EMBARGO from Deirdre Kinahan’s trilogy RAGING \nThe second play in Kinahan’s RAGING trilogy\, EMBARGO\, focuses on a pivotal moment during the Irish War of Independence. It was commissioned by Dublin Port\, Irish Rail and Fishamble Theatre Company to highlight the role of civil militancy during the Irish War of Independence against Britain. The play dramatizes the little-known strike initiated by dockers and train drivers\, who refused to handle munitions or transport British soldiers for a period during 1920-21\, at the risk of losing their jobs or worse. \nDeirdre Kinahan is an award-winning playwright and a member of Aosdána\, Ireland’s elected body of outstanding artists. She says this about the national strike of 1920: “It was…an extraordinary moment of defiance\, of sacrifice\, of ingenious battle\, and justified rage. But it came at a cost \, an immense personal cost…” \nPay what you will. \n
