SUMMARY:Creating Sketch Comedy During A Pandemic - Virtual Class

Looking for something safe and fun to do in the pandemic? Or after 2020\, are you just really in need of a laugh? Lucky for you\, the seasoned performers of Improv MKE are offering online classes so you can learn to crack people up in the comfort of your own home. In Creating Sketch Comedy During A Pandemic\, Milwaukee comedian Matthew Filipowicz will teach you how to create the style of comedy made famous by Saturday Night Live\, Monty Python\, Key and Peele\, and more using nothing more than your computer and cell phone.\nSketch comedy is traditionally composed and performed by a group of comedians together in the same room\, so how do you make sketch comedy when you can’t share physical space with other performers? In CREATING SKETCH COMEDY DURING A PANDEMIC\, students will learn different styles of sketches\, as well as techniques for creating premises and characters. No need for expensive equipment–students will write\, rehearse and create original video comedy sketches using nothing more than their computer and cell phone. \nPrerequisites\nStudents need access to a computer or cell phone with a camera\, and a stable internet connection\nStudents must commit to writing and working on their sketches outside of class\nStudents will leave the class with at least two complete original video sketches\nImprov MKE is a Black woman-owned improv theater founded by Milwaukee comedian Michelle Gilliam to create access\, both in-person and online\, for people to have fun\, learn\, grow\, and play together in ways they never thought possible.\nMatthew Filipowicz is a comedian\, cartoonist\, progressive talk radio host and the founder and host of Laughing Liberally Milwaukee. Matthew’s work has been featured on CNN\, NPR\, PBS\, HBO\, BBC\, Ain’t It Cool News\, the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, the Atlantic\, the Nation\, the London Times\, and countless sites in the progressive blogosphere including Salon\, Daily Kos and the Huffington Post.

SUMMARY:Saint Kate Artist Talk with Jill Sebastian
DESCRIPTION:Please join us virtually for a discussion with Jill Sebastian on her current exhibition at Saint Kate! \nJoin us virtually for a discussion with Milwaukee-based artist Jill Sebastian! \nSebastian will discuss her current exhibition at Saint Kate\, Preoccupations\, a solo show that spans across two Saint Kate galleries to address ongoing preoccupations throughout her life\, both material and historical. Preoccupations articulates the artist’s own experiences of recurrent historical events as a way of investigating our shared cultural\, social\, and public spaces. Through her bold exploration of artistic media\, Sebastian’s works alter our understanding of firmly-entrenched visual concepts such as perspective\, while also engaging our subliminal associations with materials. \nPlease get in touch with Saint Kate Curator\, Samantha Timm\, with any questions at SamanthaTimm@saintkatearts.com \nInterested in coming\, but not quite sure what to expect? Click here to read the Saint Kate CleanCare Pledge which outlines how we have improved our already high standards to keep your health and safety top of mind. \nSebastian’s sculpture\, drawings\, and installations have been exhibited nationally and internationally in New York City\, Los Angeles\, Milwaukee\, Chicago\, Milwaukee\, Tel Aviv\, and Amsterdam\, among other places. With extensive experience in public art installations\, one of her public collaborations include a site-specific installation and multimedia work created with Wild Space Dance Company at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Sebastian is the recipient of several awards including the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1985) and the Visual Art Lifetime Achievement Award (2016). Sebastian is a Professor Emerita at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design.

SUMMARY:MLK Virtual National Day of Service Event (all ages)
DESCRIPTION:Kids Impact Community is excited to offer a virtual all-ages celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day through an engaging story time with music and movement\, an on-the-spot service project and community art activity. \nIt’s never too early to talk to our kids about race and the Civil Rights Movement. By 6 months of age\, babies are noticing racial differences; by age 4\, children have begun to show signs of racial bias. We have invited a special guest reader to read “Let’s Talk About Race” by Julius Lester. This powerful book discusses race in a very concrete and accessible way–easy for even the youngest children to understand. \nOn this National Day of Service\, we will engage our children as dynamic and change-making citizens in an on-the-spot pantry raid following the reading of “Maddie’s Fridge” and a thoughtful chat about food insecurity. All pantry raid food items will be donated to Food is Free MKE. Drop off your donations at designated locations throughout the week or directly at Food is Free MKE the following Saturday. \nLachrissa Grandberry\, proud and loud professional actor and teaching artist with a huge smile most recently working with The Second City in Chicago\, will be guiding our kiddos through some music and movement breaks throughout the event! \nFinally\, we will conclude our event with introducing a community art activity. Art Kit pick-up instructions will be provided following registration. We challenge your family to make a commitment to service over the next year. Paint how you will make change in our community on a 6×6” canvas square. Like a quilt\, these squares will be combined into a traveling art exhibit displayed at locations throughout the area.
