SUMMARY:The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain
DESCRIPTION:“The most revelatory moment … probably came during its performance of ‘Psycho Killer\,’ the Talking Heads song\, when you realized that David Byrne had missed the boat by not recording the tune with an ensemble of singing ukulele players.” – Allan Kozinn\, The New York Times \nFounded in 1985 by George Hinchcliffe and Kitty Lux\, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is now an octet\, made up of ukuleles of different size and pitches\, physical comedy\, pun-filled banter\, and finely nuanced playing. While it is not normally in the nature of these artists from Britain to “blow their own trumpets”—or in this case to “pluck their own ukuleles”—it is undeniably a fact that The Ukulele Orchestra has become a worldwide phenomenon\, having “Sold Right Out” twice at Carnegie Hall in New York\, twice at The Royal Albert Hall in London\, and also at the Sydney Opera House in Australia. In 2015\, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain celebrated 16 million minutes of “ukuleleation\,” having been on the road for 30 years and counting.

SUMMARY:Migration of the Seapirs
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Copoulos-Selle’s new exhibit of printed works invites viewers to envision the undersea journey of imaginative hybrid creatures\, and to think more broadly about the effects of globalization. \n“Migration of the Seapirs: From Florida to Cuba” opens with a reception on Sunday\, April 8\, from 1:00-3:00 p.m.\, and will include a talk by the artist at 2:00 p.m. \nThe Alfons Gallery installation immerses viewers in a printmaker’s fantasy underwater environment of animal hybrids. Viewers will wind their way through printed hangings that depict an imaginary Florida-to-Cuba migration of Copoulos-Selle’s “Seapir\,” a hybrid sea turtle and tapir. As they follow the Seapir’s journey\, gallery visitors will encounter other wildlife combinations from Copoulos-Selle’s imagination. \nAlfons Gallery is located at St. Joseph Center\, 1501 S. Layton Blvd. (27th Street and Greenfield Avenue) in Milwaukee. Free parking is available in the lot that is accessible on 29th and Orchard (Alexia Circle entrance). For more information on Alfons Gallery\, please email vchristell@sssf.org\, call 414-385-5273\, or visit the Gallery’s website at https://alfonsgallery.org/Alfons-Gallery.htm

SUMMARY:Ex Fabula StorySlam: "Last Straw"
DESCRIPTION:Ex Fabula StorySlams strengthen community bonds by creating spaces where people can connect over true\, personal stories. No props\, no notes – just the elements of “Story. Stage. You”. This StorySlam will feature stories related to the theme of “Last Straw”. \nYou can come just to listen – or\, if you have a story related to the night’s theme and can share it in 5 minutes or less\, throw your name in the hat for a chance to take the stage. Another way to share stories is via UltraShorts\, which are brief\, true personal stories written on slips of paper and then read onstage by the emcee. At the end of the night\, the audience votes and an Audience Favorite is crowned. \nNote: Tickets are available for online purchase until noon on the day of the event. If any tickets remain\, they will be available for purchase at the door. We may also sell a small number of Rush tickets; the line forms at 6:30 and we know how many tickets are available at 7:15\, so we highly suggest purchasing tickets in advance!

SUMMARY:Opening Preview of Stitching Histories From the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:After traveling to venues across the country\, this highly acclaimed original exhibit returns to Jewish Museum Milwaukee. With this reinstallation\, JMM is expanding the discussion around immigration and cross-continental communication\, including two new stories of families attempting to flee the Holocaust. \nThrough designs rendered by Hedwig Strnad in Prague and the resulting dresses created by Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s costume shop\, the Oelsner family archive detailing their flight to Shanghai\, ‘The Port of Last Resort’\, and the Stern family collection of postcards written from a mother trapped in Poland to her child in Racine. All three narratives open windows into distinct lives with shared experiences while revealing ties to Wisconsin and demonstrating the importance of our collective role as stewards of history and memory. \nEnjoy Milwaukee’s own chanteuse and accordionist\, Robin Pluer\, composer and guitarist Chris Hanson and MSO violinist Glen Ashe for an evening of poignant music reminiscent of the WWII period including resistance songs and ballads. Sample delicious European-inspired cuisine and sip a champagne cocktail or a cold beer. Explore the exhibit throughout the night with a guided tour.

SUMMARY:Ted Yoder
DESCRIPTION:Critically acclaimed musician Ted Yoder is widely considered “the Béla Fleck of the hammered dulcimer.” Though he’s a visionary artist in his own right\, the comparison holds water in that he profoundly reimagined his instrument of choice\, inventing a fresh musical vocabulary along the way—“Yoderizing”—and his virtuosity is boundless. Yoder powerfully personalizes classics across genres and eras—including Irish traditionals\, worship music favorites\, and pop and rock songs from the Eagles and The Beatles. He also includes in his set his own gorgeously impressionistic compositions that have become modern standards for his devoted fanbase. When he plays live\, everyone becomes a fan. \nA National Hammered Dulcimer champion\, Yoder has released five solo albums and been featured in the Kearney Hub\, Huffington Post\, and on NPR’s All Things Considered. He became something of a household name when a Facebook Live video of him from his Live From The Orchard series playing Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” went viral. The video rocketed up to 53 million views in four days.

SUMMARY:Archival Odyssey: Edie (Oelsner) Shafer and the Shanghai Ghetto
DESCRIPTION:In an attempt to escape from Nazi persecution in Germany\, the family of Edie (Oelsner) Shafer fled to Japanese-occupied Shanghai in 1939\, the only place they could go without a visa. The talk will also consider the larger historical themes touched on by the Oelsners’ experience as well as the lingering questions that this research inspired\, but could only partially answer. \nKosher box lunches are available or feel free to bring your own delicious lunch. If you would like to order lunch\, please choose from the following options (each selection comes with chips\, pickle and coleslaw): \nRoast Beef Sandwich $12.00\nTurkey Sandwich $12.00\nTuna Salad Sandwich $12.00\nVegetarian Sandwich $10.00
