DESCRIPTION:CHAIR5: Perspectives on Form\, Function and Innovation is an exhibition on view in the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design’s Brooks Stevens Gallery\, October 20\, 2017 – March 3\, 2018. The Opening Reception is Friday\, October 20\, 5 – 9 p.m. for Fall Gallery Night. \nPlease note that gallery hours are Monday-Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \nThis experimental furniture exhibit in MIAD’s Brooks Stevens Gallery introduces visitors to myriad ways to think about chairs\, “chairness”\, and the physical act of sitting. Spanning across time and place\, the displays will include a selection of historic\, reproduction\, and contemporary seating furniture forms. \nThis exhibition is a MIAD/Chipstone Foundation collaboration co-curated by Jon Prown\, Brent Budsberg and Eric Vogel. Primary exhibit design is by Brent Budsberg. \n

SUMMARY:The Arts Bridge Project: A Century of Song
DESCRIPTION:What do Leonard Bernstein\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Thelonius Monk\, Lena Horne\, Desi Arnaz\, Dean Martin and Jerome Robbins have in common? Well\, for starters they were all born 100 years ago and they all changed the face of American music forever. Something magical happened those years ago as some of the greatest artists of all time were born. It was an eclectic group of talents that brought the world a brilliant display of musical diversity. \nIn honor of this historic centennial the Marcus Center joins forces with the Florentine Opera and the Milwaukee Ballet to present the first ever Arts Bridge Project. This first concert will be a glorious evening celebrating the breadth and scope of the musical offerings these celebrated artists gave to America — and the world. Backed by the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra\, the evening will highlight not only music from the worlds of Broadway\, pop\, jazz and opera but also iconic moments from the world of dance. \nThe concert will include selections from “West Side Story\,” “Porgy and Bess\,” and many Great American Songbook classics that went on the define American music. The cast will include top international vocalists alongside Milwaukee’s finest singers\, dancers and musicians. There are may surprises in store for what promises to be a once-in-a-century exclusive event created for the city of Milwaukee. \n

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Sphinx Organization\, the exciting program\, Concerti per Venti\, offers a collection of concerti through the ages\, performed by the 18-piece\, self-conducted Sphinx Virtuosi\, America’s only all Black-Latino string orchestra. From Baroque to modern day\, the program showcases a tremendous variety in languages and styles. Repertoire will include the newly commissioned Guardian of the Horizon: Concerto Grosso for Violin\, Cello\, and Strings by award-winning composer Jimmy Lopez\, Delights and Dances for string quartet and string orchestra by Michael Abels\, Beethoven’s timeless Grosse Fuge\, and Concerto Grosso by Vaughan Williams. \n
