SUMMARY:Jon Langford's Four Lost Souls w/ sp. guest Liar's Trial
DESCRIPTION:$10 advance tickets available here- https://anodynecoffee.com/shop/shop/jonlangford-2/ \nAnodyne Coffee Roasting Co.\n224 W Bruce St\, Milwaukee\, Wisconsin 53204 \nJon Langford’s (Mekons\, Waco Brothers) latest solo project “Jon Langford’s Four Lost Souls” was recorded in Muscle Shoals Alabama by legendary producer Norbert Putnam and features a collaboration with vocalists Tawny Newsome and Bethany Thomas on a whole brace of new Langford songs. \nJon was originally the drummer for the punk band The Mekons when it formed at the University of Leeds in 1977\, but he later took up the guitar as other band members left. Since the mid-1980s he has been one of the leaders in incorporating folk and country music into punk rock. He has released a number of solo recordings as well as recordings with other bands outside of The Mekons\, most notably the Waco Brothers\, which he co-founded after moving to Chicago in the early 1990s. \nAmong Langford’s musical side projects have been the Three Johns (with John Hyatt and John (Phillip) Brennan)\, the country-punk Waco Brothers\, the Pine Valley Cosmonauts and Ship and Pilot. He became a father figure to the local music scene\, encouraging many of his labelmates on Bloodshot Records and championing anyone he thought worthy of scrutiny\, often lending his services as a musician or visual artist or inviting local musicians to guest on his releases. Langford’s first official solo album\, Skull Orchard\, was released in 1998. He followed it with All the Fame of Lofty Deeds\, in 2004\, Gold Brick in 2006\, and Old Devils in 2010. \nLangford is an accomplished artist and is renowned for his multi-layered paintings of famous and forgotten figures from the dawn of country music. Nashville Radio\, a collection of his artwork and writings\, was published in 2006. \nLangford has guested on numerous recordings\, including with Dutch punk band the Ex\, The Old 97s\, Chip Taylor\, as well as Austin\, Texas legend Alejandro Escovedo\, and has recorded joint albums with Sally Timms\, Kevin Coyne\, Richard Buckner\, Kat Ex and Rosie Flores.\nhttp://www.facebook.com/jonboylangford \nMilwaukee’s own Liar’s Trial opens the show!\nCrossing the genres of classic country-western and old-school rock and roll\, Liar’s Trial is one of the latest bands to come out of the midwest to represent the outlaw country sound that was founded by the likes of Haggard\, Jennings\, Nelson\, and Billy Joe Shaver. Barn-burning tempos\, gallows humor\, shout-a-long choruses and eerie balladry comprise the heart and soul of Liar’s Trial’s repertoire. This band is just as comfortable pounding out anthems to a packed rock and roll club as it is wailing that lonesome sound to a honky-tonk full of good ol’ boys. Liar’s Trial could be the other thing that made Milwaukee famous..\nhttps://liarstrial.com/ \n

SUMMARY:The Twilight Hours with special guest Sam Llanas
DESCRIPTION:John Munson (Semisonic\, Trip Shakespeare) and Matt Wilson (Trip Shakespeare) met as teens in the late 80s when they became the rhythm section in a Minneapolis band called E Brown. At the time\, Matt was a drummer\, but he was determined to figure out how to play guitar by learning the licks on B.B. and Freddie King records. John\, who got his start in a Rush and Aerosmith cover band\, was on a higher mission of his own\, to crack the codes of jazz bass. The two eventually formed their own group\, Trip Shakespeare\, teaming with Matt’s brother Dan and a standup drummer\, Elaine Harris. They toured for a decade during the 80s and 90s\, releasing four albums. \nMatt was the band’s lyricist\, but in 1992 he foundered on such profound case of writer’s block that in desperation he broke up the group. He then watched as John and Dan rose to the peak of the billboard charts as two-thirds of a new trio\, Semisonic. John toured the world and was exposed to the music industry’s elite. Meanwhile\, Matt learned to make web pages and scuffled about the Minneapolis music scene\, eventually releasing his 1998 solo record\, the unsung classic Burnt White & Blue. \nAs the years wound ahead\, John and Matt began to perform together once more as an acoustic duo\, eventually settling on the name The Twilight Hours. In 2007 they released a gentle rock record featuring the sort of instrumentation you might hear at a high school play. That LP\, Stereo Night\, yielded a Twin Cities hit\, “Queen of Tomorrow”\, and forced the pair to build a band of talented musicians\, including Dave Salmela on piano; Steve Roehm on drums\, guitar and synth; Richard Medek on drums; and Minneapolis punk rock producer Jacques Wait on lead guitar. \nNow\, on July 15\, 2016\, the group is releasing a follow up\, the expansive Black Beauty. Wide-ranging in style and groove\, the record maintains a chordal and melodic sweetness that contradicts the sorrowful sentiments of its lyrics. This mix of sad and happy\, doom and redemption is the key to this album’s title\, and\, the group believes\, a pattern in much of the world’s greatest art – and in the world itself: darkness and beauty in one. www.thetwilighthours.com/ \nSam Llanas (founding memeber of Bodeans) opens the show with Sean Williamson! www.samllanas.com www.seanwilliamson.net/ \nadvance tickets available here–\nhttps://anodynecoffee.com/shop/shop/thetwilighthours/ \n
