SUMMARY:An Evening with Best-Selling Author Sara Paretsky
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the UWM Golda Meir Library\, with co-sponsor Boswell Book Company\, are hosting best-selling mystery novelist Sara Paretsky on Thursday\, May 11 at 7 p.m. in the fourth floor Conference Center of the Golda Meir Library\, 2311 E. Hartford Ave. \nParetsky is appearing in conjunction with the publication this spring of Fallout\, the 18th novel in her V.I. Warshawski series. \nThe event is free but seating is limited. Registration is encouraged: http://bit.ly/2nk8giv \nSara Paretsky revolutionized the mystery novel in 1982 when she introduced V.I. Warshawski in Indemnity Only. By creating a believable investigator with the grit and smarts to tackle problems on the mean streets\, Paretsky challenged a genre in which women typically were either vamps or victims. \nCritics\, readers\, and even fellow crime writers have been championing Paretsky for 35 years\, with P.D. James saying\, “For me\, the most remarkable of the moderns is Sara Paretsky . . . No other crime writer has so powerfully and effectively combined a well-crafted detective story with the novel of social realism.” \nAfter the talk\, Paretsky will sign copies of her new novel\, which will be available for purchase. \nParking is available in the UWM Union and Klotsche Pavilion parking garages. For more information or special needs\, call 414-229-6202. \nThe Friends of the Golda Meir Library will hold their annual business meeting at 6 p.m. in Special Collections.

SUMMARY:Paul Taylor Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:“Short course in modern dance: in the beginning there was Martha Graham\, who changed the face of an art form and discovered a new world. Then there was Merce Cunningham\, who stripped away the externals and showed us the heart of movement. And then there was Paul Taylor\, who let the sun shine in.” (Newsweek) \nOne of the seminal artists of the 20th and 21st centuries\, Paul Taylor continues to shape the homegrown American art of modern dance that he has helped define since becoming a professional dancer and pioneering choreographer in 1954. Described as “America’s most magnificent dancing machine performing America’s most deeply communicative and wildly theatrical modern dance” (San Francisco Examiner) and “one of the few indisputably great dance companies in the world” (New York Post)\, Paul Taylor Dance Company is the perfect finale to our 15th Anniversary Season! \nTickets: $49-$71 \nBuy tickets today at 262-781-9520 or at www.wilson-center.com.

National Ave. in New Berlin\, presents educator and big band drummer Daniel Glass in a free drum clinic on Thursday\, May 18\, 2017 starting at 6 p.m. on Cascio’s Main Stage in the back of the store. \nDaniel Glass is an award winning drummer\, author\, educator and one of today’s foremost authorities on classic American drumming. He has performed over 300 clinics and master classes all over the world\, appearing at many top international drumming festivals and conferences. \nA member of the pioneering swing group Royal Crown Revue since 1994\, Daniel has recorded and performed all over the world with many top artists\, including Brian Setzer\, Bette Midler\, Liza Minnelli and KISS frontman Gene Simmons. For two years running\, he was voted one of the top five R&B drummers in the world by readers of Modern Drummer and DRUM magazine. \nAll of Daniel’s clinics focus on the evolution of drumming\, taking into account the impact that this unique instrument has had on American popular music. Daniel presents the material with a fun\, engaging and high-energy approach that the legendary swing drummer Louie Bellson referred to as “delightful and refreshing.” \nUsing dazzling chops\, tons of showmanship and various multi-media tools\, Daniel takes his audience on a whirlwind journey that covers seven decades of groove.
