SUMMARY:Local Lives\, National Voices – Part Four: MOWA Executive Director Laurie Winters
DESCRIPTION:Traditional 17th century Baroque Still Life paintings are adorned with objects that range widely from daily household items to luxury goods; these highly detailed\, jewel-like paintings were often imbued with religious and allegorical symbolism that spoke to broader cultural interests. \nMany modern and contemporary artists have looked to this era for inspiration\, including celebrated Sheboygan Falls-based glass artist Beth Lipman. Laurie Winters\, Executive Director of the Museum of Wisconsin Art\, will explore the influence of the still life tradition on Lipman’s work as well as the history and evolution of the genre. \nJoin Jewish Museum Milwaukee for the last segment of Local Lives\, National Voices\, an engaging four-part series highlighting and celebrating individuals with local roots making an impact in a diverse range of artistic arenas on a national level.

Eric Hoeprich\, who specializes in performing on historical clarinet\, returns for this third installment\, this time with The London Haydn Quartet\, one of the world’s leading period instrument string ensembles. The program will include W.A. Mozart’s “Clarinet Quintet” K581\, Beethoven’s “String Quartet” Opus 18\, No. 3\, and the Weber “Clarinet Quintet” Opus 34.

SUMMARY:Gallery Night at the Grohmann Museum
DESCRIPTION:David Plowden states that “the architecture of steelmaking is like no other. Nowhere can you find this massiveness\, drama\, spectacle\, and danger but in a steel mill.” Between 1962 and 1985\, Plowden sought to capture the majesty of the steel industry while at the same time documenting the demise of the industry as we knew it. \nThis exhibition allows for a re-examination of Plowden’s steel portfolio\, including many photos printed specifically for this purpose. Featuring more than 100 of his finest photographs\, Steel places the viewer at the point where shovel meets dirt in the mining process and ends in the same soil surrounding these long-abandoned mills.

Hogin’s paintings are filled with images of snarling bunnies\, maternal monkeys and other creatures affected by the industrial\, pharmacological\, political\, and economical forces. \nExhibition Dates: January 6 – February 4 \nOpening Reception: Gallery Night January 20\, 5-9 p.m. \nArtist’s Talk: Saturday\, January 21 at 2 p.m.

SUMMARY:Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sara Watkins‘ new album\, Young In All The Wrong Ways\, out July 1 on New West Records\, sees her boldly stepping in to the role of frontwoman following the collaborative groups of Watkins Family Hour and the Platinum-selling\, Grammy Award-winning Nickel Creek\, which she first formed with her brother Sean Watkins and Chris Thile when she was just eight years old. Easily her most cohesive and fully realized album of her solo career\, it is also her most powerful\, personal and revealing; she wrote or co-wrote each of the 10 songs – a first for her. Watkins calls the new collection “a breakup album with myself…” and writing and recording these ten intensely soul-baring songs was a means for her to process and mark the last couple years\, which have been transformative. These songs contain some of the heaviest moments of her career\, with eruptions of thrumming B3 organ and jagged electric guitar. But it’s also quiet\, vulnerable\, tenderhearted. Performing at Kohler Memorial Theater.
