SUMMARY:Special Edition Slow Art: “Seeking Revelation”
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Cordula Grewe\, professor of art history at Indiana University Bloomington\, Stephanie O’Rourke\, senior lecturer in art history at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland\, and Nikki Otten\, associate curator of prints and drawings and curator of Seeking Revelation: German Romantic Prints and Drawings\, for a guided exploration of works in the exhibition. Through close looking and thoughtful discussion\, this intimate gallery experience invites participants to slow down\, reflect\, and engage with the German Romantics’ enduring search for meaning. \nThis drop-in experience is included with Museum admission and is free for Members. Admission tickets are available at the door or online. The Milwaukee Art Museum is grateful to its exhibition sponsors. \nMuseum Admission \nAdults: $27\, Kids under 12: Free\, Members: Free \nAbout the experts\nDr. Cordula Grewe specializes in modern European art\, with research spanning visual piety\, word-image relationships\, aesthetics\, and art as politics. She is the author of several books\, including Painting the Sacred in the Age of Romanticism (2009)\, The Nazarenes: Romantic Avant-garde and the Art of the Concept (2015)\, Wilhelm Schadow (1788–1862): Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde (2017)\, and The Arabesque from Kant to Comics (2021)\, as well as edited essay collections on museums and print culture. Her current research explores modern theo-aesthetics\, the body as medium\, and art in the Third Reich. She is also writing a nonfiction memoir\, Mink in Flames\, examining immigration\, intergenerational trauma\, and the American Dream. \nStephanie O’Rourke is a historian of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European art\, particularly in relation to resource extraction\, scientific knowledge\, and media technologies. She is a Senior Lecturer in art history at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Stephanie is the author of two books: Picturing Landscape in an Age of Extraction (University of Chicago Press\, 2025) and the prize-winning Art\, Science\, and the Body in Early Romanticism (Cambridge University Press\, 2021). She is currently a Mid-Career Fellow at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and she was previously a professeur invité at the Sorbonne and a Research Consortium Fellow at The Museum of Modern Art. She holds a BA from Harvard University and a PhD from Columbia University. \nNikki Otten is Associate Curator of prints and drawings at the Milwaukee Art Museum where she is responsible for a collection of works on paper that spans the 15th to the 21st century. Since arriving at the Museum in 2018\, she has curated the major exhibitions Currents 39: LaToya M. Hobbs\, Carving Out Time (2024)\, Always New: The Posters of Jules Chéret (2022)\, and Landfall Press: Five Decades of Printmaking (2019). She has also organized several rotations of American and European art drawn from the Museum’s collection. Previously\, Nikki held fellowships and internships at the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota\, the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk\, Virginia\, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. DESCRIPTION:St. Bernadette Parish\, 8200 West Denver Avenue (about three blocks south of Good Hope Road) invites you to enjoy their fabulous fish fry on Friday\, September 18\, from 4:30 to 7:00PM in the parish hall. Included in a $18 dinner are fish\, coleslaw\, fries\, rye roll\, tartar sauce\, lemon wedge\, and coffee. Soda\, beer\, and desserts are available for purchase. A small portion dinner is available for $15. In addition to individual dinners\, we also offer a family bucket for $46\, which includes 1.5 pounds of fish and the sides\, as well. We offer carryout and sit-down dining. \nWe can accommodate large groups. SUMMARY:Gallery Night Reception at the Grohmann Museum
DESCRIPTION:“Lina Bertucci: Railroad Voices—The Milwaukee Road\, 1974–1977” \nGallery Night Event featuring a Gallery Talk with Lina Bertucci and Cindy Angelos: The first women to work in the Milwaukee Road yards. \nLina Bertucci was hired by the Chicago\, Milwaukee\, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (The Milwaukee Road) in 1974 as a brakeman (brakewoman). She was only the second woman to work in the Milwaukee Road yards\, following her aunt\, Cindy Angelos. Both Bertucci and Angelos entered training on the same day\, and their arrival immediately sent tremors through the male-dominated field. But through ambition and optimism\, they settled in by demonstrating full competence in their many challenges. While difficult\, the work paid more than most other entry-level jobs and appealed to their adventuresome spirits. \nAs an aspiring artist\, Bertucci arrived armed with her camera in her bag\, at first hoping to simply fit in\, to be respected as more than just the “girl with the camera.” Before long\, she was accepted by most of her colleagues and set about chronicling her experience and daily toil\, and did so for three years\, until The Milwaukee Road filed for bankruptcy protection in 1977. In recalling her work\, she notes that “these photographs were never simply creative memories of a personal experience\, but a record of a social and historical moment—a communal cultural and industrial transformation that intersected with my own identity as I stood witness to its passing.” \nBertucci’s work while on ‘The Road’ resurfaces for this special display of an important part of Milwaukee’s industrial history and a woman’s impact on art and industry. Through her portraits of the railroad and the railroad worker\, we are provided an insider’s view of a world few had access to\, but so many were impacted by. \n
