SUMMARY:A Conversation with the Artists of Luftwerk and Normal Studio
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public. \nThe Haggerty Museum of Art\, in partnership with Sculpture Milwaukee\, will present a conversation with Luftwerk\, the Chicago-based artist team of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero\, and collaborator Normal Studio (Renata Graw) on Wednesday\, October 9 at 5:00 p.m. at the Haggerty Museum of Art. The artists created “SOS Color Code”\, an outdoor installation currently on view at the Haggerty. Using the universal languages of Morse code and color theory\, a series of printed flags transform the international signal of distress (SOS) into a sign of solidarity and connectedness. A companion indoor installation\, “Color Code”\, by Bachmaier and Gallero\, presents a painted mural with changing color light projections\, also in the form of Morse code dots and dashes. \nBoth installations coincide with the 2024 presidential election and the International Day of Democracy. The International Day of Democracy\, celebrated annually on September 15th\, was established in 2007 by the UN General Assembly to encourage governments to review\, consolidate\, and strengthen democracy. The General Election will be held in Wisconsin on Tuesday\, November 5\, 2024. \nThe lecture is scheduled during National Voter Education Week and is a reminder to plan to register and vote. Learn more about registration deadlines and voting methods for all 50 states at vote.org. \n

SUMMARY:Maeve and Quinn + Shell Bells + Blacktop
DESCRIPTION:Join Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. for an evening of live music featuring Maeve and Quinn\, Shell Bells and Blacktop! \nMaeve & Quinn  \nDescribed as “anything but ordinary” by the Chicago Tribune\, MAEVE & QUINN is the duo of Alaskan twin sisters Maris and Bryce O’Tierney\, multi-instrumentalists\, songwriters\, and composers. Maeve & Quinn’s music fuses alt rock\, pop\, and folk influences\, distinguished by lyrical vocal harmonies and dynamic instrumental interplay. Classically trained (voice\, guitar\, violin\, piano)\, the duo also draws on improvisation in their practice. \nMaeve & Quinn’s collaboration as twin sisters is conversational and fluid between past and present. They bring together lyrics and melodies from their respective experiences for songs of layered perspective\, addressing themes of memory\, truth\, and relationship. Maeve & Quinn’s music has a feeling of landscape\, and draws from multiple points of origin: where the sisters grew up (Alaska)\, their country of heritage (Ireland)\, and present home (Chicago). \nMaeve & Quinn have performed their music and poetry in concert with the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the Poetry Foundation; premiered their symphonic compositions with the Chicago Composers Orchestra and Anchorage Symphony Orchestra; and collaborated with dancers for film works\, most recently with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. \nFollowing their 2018 release something overheard\, something overhead\, their EP star-crossed (August 2021) was featured on Bandcamp’s ‘New & Notable’ releases. Their first full-length LP\, Another Door\, released September 2023. \nBlacktop \nBlacktop is a Milwaukee-based writing and recording project helmed by multi-instrumentalist and producer Austin Wood. The project incorporates a DIY- and analog-based approach to music creation\, embracing the creative limitations and hands-on experience that comes with recording to tape. \nResting gently between the genres of folk\, surf rock\, and dream pop\, Blacktop’s sound is adorned with soft-spoken vocals\, washed-out guitars\, and acoustic percussion/rhythmic elements. The project draws from a large pool of sonic influence\, ranging from Ethiopian jazz and Latin rhythms of the 1960-70s to contemporary artists such as Khruangbin\, Good Morning\, Loving\, and Sam Evian. \nOriginally starting as a solo project of Wood\, Blacktop has grown to include Jordan Taylor\, Jacob Olson of Hyer\, and Jacob Slade as collaborators both in the studio and on stage. Blacktop’s latest single\, “Tides”\, is out now via Nice Guys Records. \nShell Bells \nAn amalgamation of indie folk\, sunshine rock\, neo soul\, and sound healing psychedelia\, Milwaukee sprite shell bells utilizes her intuitive imagination and tender heart to deliver her song babies straight from her soul. This fæ’s amorphous musical style uses guitar effects and vocals in cultivating a transcendental space ripe with playfulness. You’re invited to share in the sonic journeys of the ever-evolving\, wholesome\, vibe maker\, shell bells. \nTickets are $15 in advance or $17 day of show. \n
