SUMMARY:Dreamworlds: Exploring the Past and Present - Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukee artist Jean Roberts-Guequierre engages with visual sources from the past that evoke the dreamworlds of Netherlandish painters Hieronymus Bosch (ca. 1450 – 1516) and Pieter Breughel the Elder (ca. 1525 – 1569). Adopting the visual vocabulary of those early masters of the moralizing and fanciful pleasure domes and hellscapes\, Jean reimagines the imagery to describe the travails of modern life\, particularly the experiences of middle-aged women. Her paintings recontextualize the male centric gaze of the past\, placing women as powerful actors and voices\, unbound by contemporary ideals of beauty and size. \nClosing Reception: Friday\, May 31st from 5 to 7 p.m. \n

DESCRIPTION:The 38th annual Make A Promise Gala is Friday May 31st at the Baird Center\, featuring SistaStrings headlining a night of Milwaukee music lineup: Latin Swing Factor\, Mrs. FUN\, and Ben Mulwana. They are sure to keep you grooving all night! \nWhat is Make A Promise? In 1986\, a group of gay men hosted a dinner party in a Milwaukee-area home to raise money for the fight against HIV/AIDS. Their success that night inspired a promise to return the next year with more people\, raise more money\, and repeat this dinner until a cure for AIDS is found. The Make a Promise story continues today in a convention center in downtown Milwaukee with hundreds of supporters. This gala is an inspiring reminder of the kind of change that’s possible when a few brave advocates ignite nearly four decades of striving to achieve health justice. \n
