SUMMARY:BrainExpo 2023
DESCRIPTION:Scientific literacy is essential for successful decision-making in many aspects of life. However\, an alarmingly large number of Americans lacks even a basic understanding of the goals and methods of science. As a result\, the social relevance of scientific research had been under-appreciated — even distorted — among large sections of the population. Many Americans\, for example\, hold a dangerously cynical view of biomedical research\, with tragic consequences for public health. \nThe MCW BrainExpo is an effort to narrow the gap between the scientific community and the general public. BrainExpo 2023 will be a 2-day event (March 10 and 11)\, featuring 10 different exhibits hosted by over 50 volunteers\, and 3 lectures presented by MCW neuroscience faculty. Visitors will be able to see (and hold) real human and animal brains\, examine brain cells through microscopes\, experience visual\, auditory\, and tactile illusions that reveal the underlying structure of our perceptual experience\, and learn about the brain’s electrical activity\, brain imaging\, brain evolution\, and common neurological disorders. \nThe BrainExpo is unique in that it brings together researchers and community members in an environment that encourages free and prolonged exchanges. Visitors are free to wander around and explore the exhibits following their curiosity\, as in a science museum. Unlike a science museum\, however\, the exhibits are staffed by scientists who are actively participating in the generation of that knowledge\, thus providing a unique opportunity for visitors to experience science from a personal\, human perspective. For the researchers who volunteer\, the experience of translating technical knowledge into an account that resonates with individuals from various educational backgrounds encourages them to think of familiar scientific ideas from new perspectives\, potentially generating new questions for scientific exploration. \n

SUMMARY:The Cash Box Kings 'Oscar's Motel' Release Party
DESCRIPTION:Join the Cash Box Kings in celebrating the release of its new album “Oscar’s Motel.” \nThe Cash Box Kings are bona fide blues royalty. Co-led by real-deal Chicago blues vocalist and songwriter Oscar Wilson and songwriter\, harmonica giant and singer Joe Nosek\, the band plays masterfully raw and unvarnished houserocking blues. Wilson’s huge\, gritty vocals and Nosek’s powerhouse harmonica fuel their razor-sharp original songs. With their top shelf musicianship and trademark good humor\, The Cash Box Kings are a one-of-a-kind blues band. In the words of MOJO magazine\, the band is “flawless.” \nMixing tough Chicago and Delta blues\, jumping proto-rock ‘n’ roll\, and steamrolling “bluesabilly” (their original mix of Chicago blues and Memphis rockabilly)\, they attack every song they play with contemporary authority and old school authenticity. The musicians feed off of each other’s ideas and energy\, effortlessly moving from a lowdown purr to a full throttle roar. \nTheir albums have topped the Billboard Blues and Living Blues Radio Charts and earned them 15 Blues Music Award (BMA) nominations (including Album of the Year\, Best Traditional Album and Band of the Year). According to No Depression\, “The Cash Box Kings are a royal hive of raucous houserockers. Whether resurrecting the past or living in the moment\, they satisfy your craving for hardcore Chicago blues\, served up hot and tasty.” \nTickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Advance tickets are available until 3 p.m. the day of the show. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m. \n
