SUMMARY:MLK Virtual National Day of Service Event (all ages)
DESCRIPTION:Kids Impact Community is excited to offer a virtual all-ages celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day through an engaging story time with music and movement\, an on-the-spot service project and community art activity. \nIt’s never too early to talk to our kids about race and the Civil Rights Movement. By 6 months of age\, babies are noticing racial differences; by age 4\, children have begun to show signs of racial bias. We have invited a special guest reader to read “Let’s Talk About Race” by Julius Lester. This powerful book discusses race in a very concrete and accessible way–easy for even the youngest children to understand. \nOn this National Day of Service\, we will engage our children as dynamic and change-making citizens in an on-the-spot pantry raid following the reading of “Maddie’s Fridge” and a thoughtful chat about food insecurity. All pantry raid food items will be donated to Food is Free MKE. Drop off your donations at designated locations throughout the week or directly at Food is Free MKE the following Saturday. \nLachrissa Grandberry\, proud and loud professional actor and teaching artist with a huge smile most recently working with The Second City in Chicago\, will be guiding our kiddos through some music and movement breaks throughout the event! \nFinally\, we will conclude our event with introducing a community art activity. Art Kit pick-up instructions will be provided following registration. We challenge your family to make a commitment to service over the next year. Paint how you will make change in our community on a 6×6” canvas square. Like a quilt\, these squares will be combined into a traveling art exhibit displayed at locations throughout the area. \n

SUMMARY:I Am a Story: Self-Portraits at The Warehouse
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition\, drawn from The Warehouse’s permanent collection\, features more than 50 self-portraits by prominent artists from 10 countries on 5 continents\, including works by Cindy Sherman\, Jim Dine\, David Hockney\, Carrie Mae Weems and William Kentridge. \nThe artists have created representations of themselves in a variety of mediums ranging from painting and photography\, to ceramic\, stone\, glass\, and video. The work varies from small scale intimate portraits to larger than life depictions of the artists. \nI Am a Story explores questions of identity and artistic intention. Through their work\, the artists alternatively reveal themselves to the viewer\, while at other times they conceal or disguise themselves. Self-portraiture has a long lineage in the history of art. Through the works in the exhibition\, the artists often show themselves actively working at their craft and engaging with the artistic tradition of self-portraiture\, at times very directly. \nARTPhone\, a cell phone-based audio guide service\, is debuting during I Am a Story. Using their own personal smartphones\, visitors can call in and hear recordings of artists speaking about their self-portraits. The opportunity to connect with world-renowned artists on a personal level in a safe\, fun and easy manner is unique. \nThe guest curator of this exhibition is Nick Pipho. Pipho previously curated exhibitions at the Union Art Gallery while completing his Master’s degree in Art History at UW-Milwaukee. He also assists with The Warehouse’s exhibitions as a preparator. \nFree and open to the public 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays\, Wednesdays\, and Fridays. Limit of 15 guests in the gallery at one time. Masks are required.\nContact: 414-252-0677 ext. 110 \nEmail: info@thewarehousemke.org \n  \n

SUMMARY:Kids Impact Community: Fill a ‘Make Your House a Home’ Basket for Acts Housing
DESCRIPTION:Join Kids Impact Community for a kid-led celebration of Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day through a virtual event and corresponding service project. With your support\, your children will engage neighbors\, friends and family to fill a Make Your House a Home \nJoin Kids Impact Community for a kid-led celebration of Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day through a virtual event and corresponding service project. With your support\, your children will engage neighbors\, friends and family to fill a Make Your House a Home Basket for Acts Housing with the painting\, gardening and other necessities a family needs to make their very first house a home. This is a great opportunity for our kids to learn they have the capability of making a difference in our community\, while spreading Dr. King’s message of equality and love! Perfect for ages K5-Tween!\nHaving a place to call home is central to our lives. It is a privilege we have come to acknowledge even more this year as we spend so much time in our homes. Safe and secure housing enables our kids to stay in the same school all year\, offers a place for family to gather\, a community to engage with and an address so we can vote and work.\nActs Housing\, a local nonprofit focuses on growing equal housing opportunities with the mission of “empowerment through home ownership.”  They believe if you buy a home\, you build a community. The organization makes it possible for families with barriers (credit\, savings\, financial\, language\, etc.) to become homeowners. They provide home buyer counseling\, real estate brokerage and home rehab expertise. Since 1995\, they have helped 2500 families purchase homes. Our baskets will be given to homeowners in celebration of their hard work and success. \n
