SUMMARY:The Shift
DESCRIPTION:The Shift is a female-focused speaker series centered on defining and fueling women’s career trajectories. \nAccording to the 2019 Women in the Workplace report from McKinsey & Co\, companies have what they need in order to effectively support diversity and inclusion. Great strides have been made by many industries to reverse the decades of disparity between the genders. But this is a critical moment. We can treat diversity like the business imperative it is\, or we can treat it as an optional initiative. We can build on the progress we’ve made\, or we can lose momentum. \nDuring The Shift\, we explore topics around achieving gender parity in the workplace and highlight intergenerational stories of female leadership. The program features an opening keynote\, a panel discussion\, inspirational storytelling sessions and a closing presentation. The evening also includes networking\, live music\, drinks and appetizers while they last. \nIn this Shift session\, we take on the topic of work/life balance. Contrary to common thought\, women are staying in the workforce and are not leaving their companies at higher rates than men. According to the Women in the Workplace report\, “The vast majority of women and men who plan to leave their company also intend to stay in the workforce—and less than 2 percent of employees are planning to leave to focus on family.” But what does that leave for life outside of work? How do companies support employees as their lives and priorities shift over time? \nDoors will not open until 6 p.m. Food and drinks will not be allowed into the auditorium. \n

SUMMARY:Lost and Found: Young Fathers in the Age of Unwed Parenthood
DESCRIPTION:Paul Florsheim will discuss his recent book “Lost and Found: Young Fathers in the Age of Unwed Parenthood” in conversation with Teran Powell\, Race and Ethnicity reporter at WUWM. \nAbout the book: \nOver the past six decades\, there have been dramatic changes in the dynamics of family life in the United States. Today\, about half of all babies born to mothers under the age of 25 will not live with their fathers for much of their childhood. Drawing from their research with young parents in Chicago and Salt Lake City\, Florsheim and Moore chronicle the lives of several fathers as they transition to parenthood\, weaving social history\, developmental psychology and family therapy into their stories. “Lost and Found” concludes with an innovative proposal for father-inclusive prenatal care to help stabilize young families. “Lost and Found” is written to be accessible to non-academics by helping the reader make sense of what is happening to fatherhood in America in a way that is engaging and compelling and ultimately hopeful. \nAbout the speakers: \nPaul Florsheim is Professor of Community and Behavioral Health Promotion at UWM’s Joseph J Zilber School of Public Health where he teaches classes on public health and mental health. Paul continues to work with young fathers and mothers in Milwaukee\, both as a researcher and a clinician. He also does research on child and adolescent mental health services and child abuse prevention. \nTeran Powell is WUWM’s race & ethnicity reporter. She was selected as the station’s very first Eric Von Fellow after graduating from Marquette University with a degree in journalism. She has been a reporter for Marquette student media and the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service\, and has freelanced for the Shepherd Express and Fox 6 News. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the UW-Milwaukee Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health. \n
