SUMMARY:UWM Lecture: Cosmoplastics\, or Bollywood’s Global Gesture
DESCRIPTION:“The World of South Asia” lecture series welcomes Professor Bhaskar Sarkar (UC-Santa Barbara) who will deliver the talk entitled “Cosmoplastics\, or\, Bollywood’s Global Gesture.”\nIndian cinema\, more specifically the Bombay-based Hindi cinema industry\, is now widely referred to as Bollywood. What work has this portmanteau term been doing as the industry has “gone global”? Drawing on salient aspects of Bombay cinema’s industrial reorganization and aesthetic modulations\, this talk will seek to develop a theory of cosmoplastics as the art of forging worlds from shifting relations and local perspectives. At stake is 1) an understanding of the political domain that is shaped by the sheer plasticity of cinema\, and 2) the recognition of “the global” as always locally grounded\, always multiple. \n“Cosmoplastics\, or\, Bollywood’s Global Gesture” is sponsored by the UWM Film Studies program and The Vilas Trust. \nThis event is free and open to the public. The talk will be held in UWM’s Curtin Hall\, Room 368. \n

SUMMARY:Theatre Gigante presents: The Beggar's Opera
DESCRIPTION:A raucous comedy about corruption\, greed\, self-interest and love\, based on the original by John Gay. \nTheatre Gigante presents THE BEGGAR’S OPERA\, written & adapted by Isabelle Kralj & Mark Anderson\, directed by Kralj\, with music composed by Dan Dance\, lyrics by Ian Bedford\, Kralj & Anderson\, and John Gay. \nLighting design by Eric Appleton\, costume coordination by Marion Clendenen-Acosta\, fantastic scenic art created by Carri Skoczek\, and musical direction by Ruben Piirainen. \nIn 1728\, John Gay wrote The Beggar’s Opera\, introducing the character of Macheath\, who has survived nearly three centuries as a charming rogue\, in both John Gay’s original\, in The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht and Elizabeth Hauptmann\, and now in Theatre Gigante’s modern version. Full of contemporary social/political critique\, a lot of humor\, and a clever twist or two\, Theatre Gigante’s THE BEGGAR’S OPERA promises to bring home the bacon. \nWith Steven Koehler\, Leslie Fitzwater\, Ben Yela\, Kathryn Cesarz\, A.J. Magoon\, Rick Pendzich\, Rose Grizzell\, Nate Press\, Ruben Piirainen. \nSeptember 27 – October 12\, 2019 \n
