SUMMARY:Socks in the Frying Pan at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center
DESCRIPTION:Kick off an early St. Patrick’s Day with the sizzling Irish trio Socks in the Frying Pan at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center\, 2133 W. Wisconsin Ave.\, Milwaukee on Saturday\, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. \nThe award-winning band with the distinctive name hails from Ennis\, County Clare\, the universal hub of Irish traditional music. The trio blends tight three-part vocal harmonies\, virtuoso musical ability and a witty stage presence to capture audiences around the world including those at Milwaukee Irish Fest\, where they celebrated their 10th birthday as a trio in August. \nThe Hayes brothers – Fiachra on fiddle\, banjo and bodhrán and Shane on button accordion\, along with guitarist and lead vocalist Aodán Coyne – initially played together during sessions in Ennis pubs. Their first album titled Socks in the Frying Pan was released in 2012. They made their touring debut in 2014 followed by the release of Return of the Giant Sock Monsters from Outer Space in 2015 and Without a Paddle in 2016. \nEach of the band members was attracted to music early on. Fiachra was playing fiddle by age three and then added piano\, mandolin\, whistle\, guitar\, button accordion and banjo. Fiddle remains his first passion and he has won many competitions including the prestigious “Ceol an Gheimhridh.” He also earned a music teaching degree from Limerick’s Mary Immaculate Collage. Shane was experimenting with sounds on the piano as soon as he could walk\, taking whistle lessons at age six and playing the accordion two years later. He was awarded best accordion player 2015 by the Irish Music Association. Along with studying teaching\, he earned a master’s degree in Irish traditional music from the University of Limerick. Aodán grew up in a musically rich family and began playing guitar as a teen-ager. Folk World said he is “capable … of joining the ranks of the great Irish vocalists.”  He earned a B.A. in Applied Music at the Dundalk Institute of Technology\, studied arts administration in Cork and biochemistry in Limerick. \nConcert tickets are $29 in advance\, $33 on concert day\, $10 for students with ID and free for ages 12 and under. For more information and to order tickets online\, go to www.ichc.net or call (414) 345-8800. \n“They wrap traditional tunes in modern garments and spice them up with driving grooves.” – Folk World \n“Simply stupendous\,” – Irish American News \nIrish Cultural and Heritage programs are supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. The ICHC supports the Irish community by serving as a venue dedicated to enhancing\, promoting and preserving Irish culture and heritage along with serving the community at large. The center\, housed in the landmark 1880s former Grand Avenue Congregational Church\, is the site for concerts\, art exhibits\, Irish dances and genealogical research. \n

SUMMARY:Alex Ballard & Sugarfoot\, Wire & Nail\, The Fainting Room
DESCRIPTION:The tale of Missouri-born Americana singer-songwriter\, Alex Ballard\, is certainly a rich tapestry. After Ballard’s 1980’s band Baku Press disbanded\, he relocated to Seattle to write and reflect. Although the music scene there was on the verge of exploding\, Ballard returned to his long-time home\, Milwaukee with a fresh batch of songs\, and released his first solo E.P.\, Madeira\, on Don’t Records. The E.P. was nominated for 5 WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) awards\, received rave reviews in publications like College Music Journal and airplay on both independent and commercial radio. Ballard formed Sugarfoot in 1993 to tour behind the effort. \nAt the 1993 South by Southwest Convention\, Alex Ballard and Sugarfoot was one of three artists reviewed by the panel in their marketing seminar. Industry veteran and enigma\, Kim Fowley\, took notice and shopped the band to various labels and industry moguls. That same year\, Alex Ballard and Sugarfoot were voted one of the top 10 unsigned bands in the country\, according to Musician Magazine. \nIn 1999\, the band recorded Take a Picture (Karmadillo Entertainment Recordings)\, the band’s first full-length. It received great reviews and write-ups in Billboard Magazine and No Depression\, among other publications\, and indie sales of the record were brisk. The band toured behind the album extensively throughout the Midwest and beyond\, opening for such legendary acts as Wilco\, Little Feat\, The Band\, Semisonic\, and others. Recently\, in 2018\, they opened for Edgar Winter at the world’s largest music festival\, Summerfest. \nAlthough personnel have changed over the years\, one thing has remained consistent\, and that is the quality of Ballard’s songwriting. The current lineup\, featuring Jeff “H” Harrington on bass\, Dan Johnston on guitars\, Matt Davies on keyboards\, and Jeff Jara on drums\, delivers the goods live\, and Ballard performs at his best. On their latest releases\, Built my World and Lathe of Heaven (Karmadillo Entertainment Recordings)\, the band showcases their folk rock and Americana roots as well as their pop sensibilities. The strength of the songs combined with the current lineup will make Alex Ballard and Sugarfoot a contender for your shortlist. Check them out! \nWire & Nail is a Rock N Roll band from Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. Wire & Nail formed in early 2017\, when members of multiple Milwaukee bands bonded over their love of Outlaw Country and Classic American Rock N Roll. Like many of their influences\, Wire and Nail strive to write and perform music that is genuine\, enjoyable and unapologetic. They released their self titled EP in the Summer of 2017\, which can be found everywhere music is sold or streamed. Wire & Nail is Phil Bregant\, JT Gylland\, Ryan Moran\, and Cass Borgardt. \nThe Fainting Room (band): Lisa Ridgely\, guitar and vocals; Sara Moilanen\, bass guitar and vocals; Ryan Elliott\, guitar and vocals. \nLisa Ridgely: A singer-songwriter who taught herself how to play guitar during her college years at UW-Milwaukee\, Lisa continued to experiment with songwriting for a decade until she was inspired to face her fear of public performance and hit some open mics. \nAfter performing her songs as a solo artist for a few years\, Lisa decided to expand her sound with a backing band\, The Fainting Room. It was a very wise choice. \n$12 advance tickets available or $15 at the door \n
