SUMMARY:Balancing Act: The Physics of Bicycling
DESCRIPTION:The simple bicycle is one of humankind’s most fascinating and versatile inventions\, and its behaviors have perplexed scientists and engineers for centuries — or so some headlines would have you believe. \nDr. Andrew Dressel from the UWM College of Engineering and Applied Science will separate the myth from the machine with many demystifying demonstrations\, and we hope you will join us as we take a closer look at how bicycles harness human power\, brake on a dime\, stay upright — even without a rider — and steer down the road! \nThis show is free and family-friendly! Shows run every Friday in February at 7 p.m. with a Sunday matinee show at 2 p.m. on February 10. \nThis event is part of UWM’s Science Bag series which is held in the UWM Physics Building\, Room 137\, located at 1900 E. Kenwood Blvd. (the corner of Kenwood and N. Cramer St.). \n

SUMMARY:In the New Chamber
DESCRIPTION:Present Music’s “In the New Chamber” concert features new (really new!) chamber music curated by Present Music ensemble member Eric Segnitz and performed in the new (really new!) Jan Serr Studio. The studio’s two-story window overlooking the busy streets of the East Side will serve as the backdrop to the 21st century\, technology-rich program on February 21st and 22nd. This enjoyable and entertaining program will delight you with over a dozen works new to Milwaukee\, written by composers from the Icelandic cool to the heat of the Australian outback! \nThe concert is\, in part\, a reaction to the lack of access that women composers face. A recent article reported that almost 95% of classical music concerts worldwide scheduled through 2019 did not include the performance of a single work composed by a woman. And when looked at piece-by-piece\, women composers account for only 2.3% of all music performed. Present Music’s performance history significantly surpasses this lack of recognition: in 2018\, women composed nearly half of the works performed. \nThis February\, Present Music is once again calling attention to women and non-binary composers who are creating extraordinary new music that is rarely being performed elsewhere! \nFriday\, February 22nd\, 2019\nCasual Evening Concert\n7:30 p.m. (doors at 6:30 p.m.) \nThe perfect mid-winter\, Friday date-night or group outing to fit any budget. The cash bar will be open\, come as you are\, and relax! Preferred Seating is $55 and General Admission is $25 per ticket. Please call the Box Office for discounts. \n
